Men’s Golf Bounces Back in Final Round at Woodmont

ROCKVILLE, Md. -- After a tough second round, the Towson University men's golf team bounced back Monday afternoon at the Howard Bison Invitational, climbing back to fourth overall during action at The North Course at Woodmont Country Club.

The Tigers got a fourth-place finish from Julian Gonzalez, who carded a one-over 73 on Monday afternoon for a 228 total. Jeremy Summerson joined Gonzalez in the top 10, tying for seventh place with a 229. Towson had the lowest team total for the third round with a 307, the only team under 311 on day two.

Bucknell University won the event with a 922. The Bison had the top overall finisher, Jackson Bussell, who finished with a 224. William & Mary was second with a 923 while Princeton University scored a 926 for third.

How it Happened
  • Towson matched its first-round total during the final round of 307 on Monday. Gonzalez led the Tigers on day two with his 73, logging four bogies but countering with three pars. Two of the seniors' three birdies came on Par 5s, helping to a tie for fifth place overall.
  • Summerson finished tied for seventh overall with a 229 total, carding a 78 in the third round.
  • Justin Griffith had the second-best round three for the Tigers, posting a 76 that included four birdies, including three on Par 3 holes. The senior finished tied for ninth at the Invitational as well.
  • Brad Riley logged a 242 total with a round of 80 on day two while Philip Minnehan tallied a 248 with an 88 in the third round.
  • Individually, Brad Freyberger finished tied for 20th at the Howard Bison Invitational. 
Behind the Numbers
  • Gonzalez was the top player in the field on the Par 5s, averaging 4.83 and a -2 across the long holes at Woodmont Country Club. Freyberger, who made his collegiate debut this weekend, was one of the best Par 3 players, averaging a 3.00 on the threes, tied for first with William & Mary's Ethan Mangum, who finished second overall.
  • Griffith and Gonzalez tied for first with two other players for the most birdies across the three rounds, scoring eight in the 54 holes.
