ST. HELENA ISLAND, S.C. – Towson University men's golf sits in podium position at third place after the first round of the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Championships after shooting 10-under par. Every scoring golfer shot at least even par for the Tigers.
Ariihau Faana entered the clubhouse in second place as an individual carding five under par. Faana started his day with birdies on three of the first four holes and shot four-under on the back nine, shooting par or better on every hole. Faana's 32 on the back-nine was the lowest back nine of the first round.
Sky Aung also ended the first round in the top five after round one shooting four-under par. Aung birdied five of the first thirteen holes, shooting par or better on every hole on the front nine.
Matthew Gonello shot one-under par on round one, with a two under par front nine highlighted by back-to-back birdies on holes seven and eight. He sits in 20th place after the first round.
Jai Sheth shot even par in the first round. He started his day with a birdie on the first hole which helped carry him to a one-under par front nine. Sheth is in 25th place after 18 holes.
Michael Matheson rounds out Towson's golfers who competed on the day. He shot one over par but one-under par on the final eight holes, all of which were par or better.
Towson's current standing can be partly attributed to par four scoring. The Tigers are shooting three-under on par fours, no other team is shooting under par. The Tigers have the second most birdies, are tied for the second most pars and have the fewest bogeys and double bogeys.
Two Tiger talents top the leaderboard in par three and par four scoring. Aung is tied for first on par threes at two-under par and Faana is tied for first on par fours at three under par. Faana has the most birdies so far while Gonnello is tied for the most pars.
UNCW currently lead the team leaderboards at 12-under par. The Seahawks also have the individual leader in James Rico.
