ST. HELENA ISLAND, S.C. – After a four-over par third round, Towson University men's golf finishes fifth at the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Championships.
Ariihau Faana finished in a tie for fourth place on the individual leaderboard at six-under par. The fifth place team finish is the best finish since 2017 when Towson finished third. Faana's finish was the best finish for an individual since Spencer Alexander finished third in 2017.
Faana carded one-under par round of 71 on Tuesday to finish all three rounds of par or better golf. Faana fired a 67 (-5) in Sunday's opening round and shot an even par 72 on Monday. The junior shot -14 on the first and final thirds of the course.
Sky Aung had the second best finish for a Towson golfer at two-under par after rounds of 68-75-71. The junior started the tournament by shooting five-under par through the first 13 holes. Aung finished the tournament in 13th place.
Faana and Aung's classmate,
Michael Matheson, carded his third straight 73 in the third round. He had par or better golf on the final seven holes. Matheson's three-over par tournament total was good for 26th place in the tournament.
Matthew Gonnello, the fourth junior in Towson's lineup, entered the clubhouse in 29th place after shooting 78 (+6) in the third round. Gonnello shot 71-71 in the first two rounds.
Jai Sheth rounded out the Towson golfers with a 40th place finish at 12-over par. The senior shot 72-79-77 in his final tournament. He wraps up his career ranked 21st on the all-time scoring list with an average of 75.86 over 71 rounds.
Aung was one stroke off a tie for first in par three scoring at two-under par. Faana had the third best par four scoring at four-under par while also pacing the field with 16 birdies. Gonnello finished in a tie for fourth in pars with 36.
UNCW won the team championship at -38. The Seahawks also had the individual winner in James Rico who shot 14-under par.
