Tigers Capture Team Title at Towson Fall Invitational

GRASONVILLE, Md. -- Charging back in the third and final round of the Towson Fall Invitational, the Towson men's golf team captured the team title at Prospect Bay Country Club Sunday afternoon.

The Invitational win was the first under fifth-year head coach Mike Larkin, who saw his team fire a 287 in the third round for a 54 hole total 868. The Tigers edged Howard University by one stroke as the Bison shot a 288 in the final round for an 869 total. Defending champion Robert Morris finished third at 873, fading in the final round with a 299.

Winning the event marks the first time since 2015 when the Tigers took the team title at the Whistling Straits Intercollegiate.

Howard's Everett Whiten Jr. won the individual title with a 206 (65-74-67). Robert Morris' Josh Nagy took second with a 209 (65-71-73) while Towson's Jeremy Summerson took third with a 214 (78-64-72) thanks to a jaw-dropping 64 in the second round.

"I'm really excited for the guys," said Larkin. "They've been working hard and deserved to see it finally pay off with a win, so it's nice that the chips fell our way. It's something that we can fall back on and build from as we go into the spring. We need to remember that when things got close at the end today, we stuck to the process and got it done. I think we'll also always remember this one for Jeremy's 64 in Round 2. I reminded the guys on Saturday night that 64s don't happen often, for anybody, so we need to recognize and celebrate them when they do. That was a really special moment for him to share with the team, and even better that it helped us to get this win."

How it Happened
  • Summerson was one of three Tigers in the group at par or better with his third-round 72, playing even on the 6,624 yard course. Summerson posted three bogies but added three birdies to balance his card.

  • Freshman Philip Minnehan finished the third round with a -2 70 thanks to five birdies. Justin Griffith rounded out his weekend with a 72 as well, finishing with a 226 (76-78-72).
  • Despite playing with four players, the Towson B Group finished sixth overall in the eight-team field, firing a 295 on the day.
  • Brad Freyberger led the group with a 221 (70-75-76) with Branden Nguyen taking a 222 (75-75-72). Jeff Mankins logged a 227 (75-77-75) as Vincent Fanucchi finished with a 228 (76-80-72). Nguyen and Fanucchi logged pars in the third round for the team.
