RICHMOND, Va. -- After backstopping the Towson University women's volleyball team to a 2-0 weekend, junior libero Rachel Hess has been selected as the CAA Defensive Player of the Week. The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) made its announcement Monday afternoon.

This is the first weekly honor for Hess from the CAA. Delaware's Lani Mason and Northeastern's Erica Staunton were selected the CAA Co-Offensive Players of the Week while Northeastern's Jessica Frannea was named CAA Rookie of the Week.

This is the third time this season Towson has picked up a weekly honor. Nina Cajic and Fay Bakodimou have previously been honored as Offensive Players of the Week. Hess is the first defensive player to win a weekly honor for the Tigers this fall.

Hess had a solid weekend in Towson's pair of wins at William & Mary, including a four-set victory on Friday and a sweep on Saturday. The Breiningsville, Pennsylvania native grabbed 38 digs this weekend, including a match-best 23 Friday night. Hess averaged 5.43 digs per set this weekend, bolstered by another 15 digs on Saturday in the sweep.

Backing one of the top defenses in the country, Hess helped hold William & Mary to just .112 hitting over the weekend, including a .056 on Friday and a .185 on Saturday.

The junior libero added four assists at Kaplan Arena as well, while serving in an ace in Friday's matchup.

Hess and Towson make a long-awaited return to SECU Arena on Friday night with a showdown against long-time rival Delaware. Action is set for 7 p.m. on Friday with a 1 p.m. first serve against Delaware on Sunday.
