TOWSON, Md. – For the upcoming Military Appreciation Game on Saturday, the Towson University football team will be honoring one of its own, Wardell Turner, who made the ultimate sacrifice for his country.
Army Sergeant Major Wardell Turner '89 passed away from an IED attack in Afghanistan in 2014. The fallen Tiger and former Towson football player is honored every year with the Wardell Turner Scholarship, awarded annually since 2016 to a defensive back who is in good academic standing and demonstrates leadership, selfless service and commitment. Defensive back
Jamal Gay is this year's recipient of the Wardell Turner Scholarship.
The new uniforms, designed by Under Armour, feature camouflage numbers on the gray jersey and a camo look on the sleeves. In addition, the pants will have a patch with the command sergeant major rank insignia, the rank of Turner when he passed.
For the helmet, the Tiger Head will have the USA flag in gray and black, plus players will have the option of having a military branch sticker.
"I'd like to thank the administration, they've been working very hard with Under Armour to make something not just different, but special, to honor Wardell and the sacrifices that have been made by American service members," said Towson head coach
Rob Ambrose. "We are always going to remember Wardell Turner, and this is one step in that direction. There is a commentary that you die twice: physically and when people forget you. We are going to wear those jerseys to honor him, his name will be said over and over again, and that is one step to make sure he never dies twice. He shall never be forgotten."
The uniform was revealed to the team after Wednesday's practice for the first time.
Towson's final home game of the regular season will commence on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 2 p.m. vs. Elon. For ticket information, interested parties may contact the Towson Athletics ticket office by visiting
