TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's basketball program is set to host James Madison University on Wednesday at SECU Arena for a 2 p.m. tipoff. The game will be available on FloHoops.com.
The contest was postponed from the original date of Jan. 5 due to COVID-19 protocols.
LAST TIME OUT (Feb. 7)
Towson completed its sweep over Charleston with an 84-63 win on Sunday at SECU Arena. Kionna Jeter scored 37 points in the victory to set a new career-best and tie the most points scored in a CAA (Colonial Athletic Association) game this season. Aleah Nelson also had an impressive performance, netted 17 points as well as earning a game-high six assists and career-best nine rebounds. Shavonne Smith added 10 points to collect her 10th double-digit performance in 11 outings. The Tigers led for 36:22 of the outing and held the Cougars to just 31.6 percent shooting from the floor. Jeter earned CAA Player of the Week following her 65-point series performance, her third of the season.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Towson will aim to continue its four-game win streak with a victory over the Dukes. The Tigers have the second highest scoring offense in the country and first in the CAA with 88.6 points per game. Jeter, who was named to the Dawn Staley late season award watchlist, leads Towson's offensive attack with 26.0 points per game, ranking third in the country. Aleah Nelson helps thread the Tigers' offense with 7.1 assists per game, which ranks fourth nationally. Nelson (14.7) along with Smith (14.3) also join Jeter in double figure scoring. In addition, Smith leads the conference with 55.3 percent shooting from the field.
DYNAMIC DUO
Towson is the only program in the country to have a player rank inside the top-5 in both points (Jeter) and assists (Nelson) per game. Nelson has assisted on 29 of Jeter's field goals this season, resulting in 73 points. The bond has strengthened during league play, with 18 assisted field goals and 45 points.
THE JAMES MADISON SERIES
(JMU leads 46-6)
James Madison leads the all-time series between the two programs 46-6. The Tigers won the last showdown at SECU Arena, however, topping the Dukes 76-75 on Jan. 12, 2020.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE DUKES
Towson dropped a tight 89-85 decision on the road to James Madison during the last meeting between on the two programs on Jan. 3. The Tigers came back and knotted the score at 83 with 43.1 seconds to play in the contest, but it wasn't enough as Kiki Jefferson cashed in on a layup before shooting 4-for-4 at the line to steal the win. Jeter led scoring (25) with Smith (21) and Nelson (11) following closely behind.
LOOKING INTO JMU
JMU enters the weekend series with a 10-6 overall record along with a 6-3 mark in conference action. The Dukes are coming off a sweep of Elon this past weekend, defeating the Phoenix 67-55 on Saturday and 7-54 on Sunday. Jefferson leads the Dukes with 15.1 points per game and 7.2 rebounds per game. Freshman Jamia Hazell earned her second CAA Rookie of the Week honor in a row after averaging 12.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.0 steals per game last weekend against Elon.
JETER MOVES TO FIFTH
Kionna Jeter is currently at fifth overall on the Towson University women's basketball all-time scoring list. The Spartanburg, S.C. native has 1,410 career points. Next on the list is Tara Rottet with 1,416 points.
