Benzing, Canny Earn Weekly Honors from CAA

RICHMOND, Va. -- After the final two weeks of dual meet competition, a two members of the Towson University men's swimming and diving program collected weekly honors from the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA).

Wednesday afternoon saw freshman Brian Benzing collect CAA Swimmer of the Week plaudits while senior Will Canny was named CAA Diver of the Week.

This is the second time this spring Canny has been named CAA Diver of the Week, adding to his career-long list of the honor. It is also the second time Benzing has picked up the Swimmer of the Week award, joining his February 10 selection.

Benzing continued to dominate the breaststroke events over the last two weeks, including another school record (53.62 seconds) which sits as an NCAA B Cut time. Last weekend, he concluded the regular season unbeaten in the 100-yard distance, leading Towson to a 164.5-123.5 win over Delaware, after topping Mount St. Mary's 139-103 the week prior. Benzing now owns the four fastest times in program history in the 100-yard breaststroke. At Delaware, he added a 2 minute, 2.26 second win at 200-yards, another program top 10 time.

Canny capped his career dual meets with sweeps, taking the 1-meter dive at Delaware with a 250.40, followed by a win at 3-meters with a 250.00. A week earlier, Canny won the 1-meter event at the Duke Dog Diving Invite by six points with a 282.65. He then finished third on the 3-meter with a 287.95 at the Duke Dog Diving Invite.

The pair, along with their teammates, gear up for their next competition at the end of March at the CAA Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted in Christiansburg, Virginia. The diving portion is set for March 26 and March 27, while the swimming will run from March 29-April 2. Both competitions will take place at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.
