Towson Tennis Defeats Mount St. Mary’s on Senior Day

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University tennis team defeated Mount St. Mary's, 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Tiger Tennis Complex for its second consecutive victory at home. Last weekend, the Tigers turned back Loyola by the same score.

Before the match, the Tigers honored seniors Alexa Martinez, Lauryn Jacobs and redshirt junior Schuyler Tose. All three contributed to the victory.

In doubles, Martinez and Themis Haliou won for the sixth time in the last eight matches, while Tose, paired with Jessica Assenmacher, clinched the point with a 6-4 win.

Martinez, who has the distinction of winning matches in all six singles and all three doubles positions in the lineup during her career, made short work of her opponent at No. 1 singles, winning 6-1, 6-0.  As a sophomore in 2018-19, the John Carroll graduate played both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. Today was her 58th singles appearance and 51st doubles match for Towson.

"There are all sorts of different players at the different spots in the lineup. What Alexa has done is amazing. To my knowledge nobody else has ever done what she has done," said Towson head coach Jamie Peterson: "Being able to jeep herself healthy is a very impressive thing. In tennis, you are not touching anybody but it is a physical sport. She has been willing to play wherever and has been consistent all four years."

Jacobs, who transferred from Towson after two seasons at Providence, powered her way to a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles. Tose, who played for the first time this season, lost a hard-fought match at No. 6 singles.

In addition to the Martinez and Jacobs matches, Towson picked up three other straight set singles victories in singles.

Haliou improved to 2-0 at No. 2, winning 6-0, 6-1.

Amelia Lawson won for the fourth consecutive time since being moved to No. 3. In wins over Temple, George Mason, Loyola and The Mount, the junior has won 48-of-65 games.

Sarah Pospischill won her team-leading seventh singles match. The sophomore is 4-2 at No. 4, has two wins in the No. 5 spot and is 1-0 at No. 6.

"As slow as the start was in the doubles, they amped it up in the singles," added Paterson. "We came out and took care of business against a pretty tough team."

Towson now leads the all-time series with Mount St. Mary's, 13-1, and has won nine straight.
