TOWSON, Md. – Playing on the Tiger Tennis Complex courts for the first time in 720 days, the Towson University tennis team defeated Loyola, 6-1, on Saturday. The last time the Tigers played at home was April 13, 2019.
Head coach
Jamie Peterson shuffled up his lineup in both singles and doubles. He flipped
Alexa Martinez and
Themis Haliou in singles and made changes to the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams. All four moves worked as each won in straight sets.
Towson won all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Martinez and Haliou (No. 1) won for the fifth time in seven matches.
Amelia Lawson and
Lea Kosanovic paired for the first time were victorious at No. 2, while
Sarah Pospischill and
Jessica Assenmacher, playing together for just the second time this season also won.
The Tigers clinched the match with straight set victories by Pospischill, Haliou and Assenmacher. The trio combined to lose two games in six sets.
Lawson won in straight sets for her third consecutive singles victory.
Martinez, playing No. 1 for the first time all season, also won in straight sets. As a sophomore in 2018-19, she played both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. The senior from the John Carroll School in Harford County was playing in her 57
th career singles match and Saturday was her 50
th career doubles appearances for the Tigers.
Towson has now beaten the Greyhounds five consecutive times. This was the first match-up since 2015. The two are scheduled to play at Loyola on April 18.
The Tigers also have victories over Norfolk State and Delaware State this season. Three of losses have been at the hands of teams that were ranked in the top ten in the East Region – Liberty, James Madison and Navy. Three others have been to top teams in the Colonial Athletic Association – William & Mary, Elon and the College of Charleston.
