Coleman, Johnson, Track & Field Earn USTFCCCA Academic Honors

NEW ORLEANS -- After successful seasons in the arena, two members of the Towson University women's track and field program, as well as the team itself, were named among the USTFCCCA NCAA Division I All-Academic Athletes and Teams.

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) made its announcement Thursday evening. Lauren Coleman and Crystal Johnson earned individual plaudits while the program was honored as well.

More than 1,100 women were honored, hitting the minimum 3.25 cumulative grade point average through the Spring 2021 semester. Additional athletic requirements were met for Coleman and Johnson as well. For team honors, a team cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better was required.

This spring, Coleman qualified for the NCAA Division I East Preliminary meet for the outdoor season in both the shot put and hammer throw. At the UNCW Invitational, Coleman captured first place in the shot and took third in the hammer, earning CAA Field Athlete of the Week honors in mid-March. Coleman was instrumental in helping the Tigers finish second at the CAA Championships, winning the shot put (16.11 meters), while finishing fourth in the hammer (52.77m) and eighth in the discus (41.84m).

One of Towson's top sprinters, Johnson became the first outdoor Tiger to qualify for the NCAA Division I East Preliminary meet, racing in the 100 meter event in Florida this spring. Johnson set the school record for the 100 meter twice this spring, eventually clocking an 11.50 while also putting up a personal best of 23.93 in the 200 meter. At the CAA Championships, Johnson doubled in the sprints, winning both the 100 (11.73) and the 200 (23.93) and was on the winning 4x100 relay squad (45.57). On the indoor track, Johnson claimed victories in the 60 at both the VMI Team Challenge and the Brant Tolsma Invitational.
