First Rotation
The Tigers compete at SECU Arena for the first time this season, opening the home season with a quadmeet against No. 30 West Virginia, William & Mary and West Chester. It will be Towson's first home meet since March 14, 2021.
In The National Rankings
Towson received votes in the preseason WCGA Coaches' Poll, picking up 202 points, putting Towson fourth in the RV column and just outside the top 36 teams in the poll. West Virginia was ranked 30th in the preseason poll with 428 points.
The Young But Experienced Tigers
A young but experienced Towson squad picked up a season-opening win last weekend at UNH, topping the host Wildcats 194.000-192.250. It was a program-best score for Towson to open a season.
Towson's newcomers showed up to open the year as the Tigers kicked off on bars in Durham, New Hampshire, where only one Tiger, Grace Vaillancourt, had put down a collegiate bars routine. Steph Macasu, Amanda Pedicelli, Lauren Keener, Cassidy Stuart and Clara Hong all competed on bars for the first time in college.
The Tigers picked up six top-three finishes at UNH: Paige Casper (1st FX), Steph Macasu (1st UB), Lauren Bolen (2nd VT), Amy Stewart (2nd FX), Lauren Keener (3rd, UB), Camille Vitoff (3rd VT).
Overall at Lundholm Gymnasium, Towson out-scored the Wildcats on bars (48.750-47.800) and floor (48.575-47.725). In the other two events, the Tigers were gapped by just .025 in both events.
Scouting the #30 Mountaineers
West Virginia will be making its season debut Friday night after the Mountaineers' meet at LSU last weekend was cancelled. In duals last season, the Mountaineers finished 2-7 overall and took third at the NCAA Morgantown Regional Championships, hosted by West Virginia. The home team scored 195.650 points behind eventual national champion No. 4 Michigan (197.650) and No. 13 UCLA (197.050). Now a senior Rachel Hornung took third on the beam with a 9.85.
Scouting the Tribe
William & Mary makes a northern swing this weekend, leading off at SECU Arena Friday night before heading to Washington, D.C. on Sunday to face George Washington. Friday's quadmeet will be the season opener for the Tribe, which competed three times last spring among several cancellations. This season, the Tribe will compete as members of the Gymnastics East Conference, joining this weekend's foe, West Chester.
Scouting the Rams
Besides Towson, West Chester is the only team at this weekend's quad meet with a competition under its belt this season. The Rams are currently 3-0, picking up wins against Yale, Brown and LIU. Also a member of the newly-formed Gymnastics East Conference, the Rams picked up wins over league opponents Yale and Brown. Jessica Meakim competed all-around last weekend, scoring a 38.900. She, along with Kiah Johnson, scored a 9.750 on vault. Jordan Coleman led on bars with a 9.775. Natalie Marshall paced the Rams on beam at 9.700 followed by Meakim on floor with a 9.800.
Building on a Strong Start
Last weekend, the Tigers put up 194.000 points at UNH, the top mark for the program in a season opener.
Towson will look to build on that success in its home opener this weekend; since rejoining EAGL in 2013, Towson's top mark for a home-opening meet is a 194.725, accomplished twice: once in 2018 and again two seasons ago for the 2020 home opener with West Chester, William & Mary and Cornell. The Tigers opened that weekend with the clean sweep.
Under third-year head coach Jay Ramirez, the Tigers are 8-7 at SECU Arena for duals.
