ROBERT “Bobby” F. WASHINGTON (May 18, 1956 – January 12, 2022)

Bobby Washington, a Towson University Hall of Fame member who was instrumental in the Tigers' rise to a number one national basketball ranking during their NCAA Division II glory days in the late seventies, passed away at his Peachtree City, Ga. home January 12th following complications from COVID-19. He was 65-years-old.

A four-year starter at forward, Bobby led the Tigers to a combined two-year 53-7 mark that included back-to-back undefeated records (20-0) in Mason-Dixon Conference play. In his junior year (1976-77) Towson posted a 27-3 mark and was ranked number one in the NCAA Division II national poll for most of the season as he averaged 10.0 points and 7.4 rebounds. That mark included a school record 23-game winning streak. After capturing the Mason-Dixon title and the South-Atlantic Regional championship, Towson advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals where they were beaten 85-82 by Sacred Heart.

The following year, with Bobby as team captain and averaging 10.7 points and 9.0 rebounds, Towson repeated its Mason-Dixon title. The Tigers' season ended with a loss in the NCAA Regional championship game. Towson closed out the regular season as the number three ranked team in Division II, compiling a 26-4 record.

Early on at Towson Bobby averaged 14.8 points and 7.4 rebounds as he helped the Tigers to a 14-11 record in his freshman season. In his sophomore year, he averaged 15.1 points and a conference leading 9.4 rebounds as the Tigers posted a 19-10 record and finished as Mason-Dixon runner-up.

"Bobby was one of the finest individuals I've ever known," said his former Tiger coach, Vince Angotti. "He was a great athlete. We talked monthly for many years after he graduated. He loved Towson."

A two-time first team All-Conference selection, Bobby remains among the top 10 scorers all-time at Towson with 1,437 points. He is one of only three players in the 100-year history of Tiger men's basketball to have grabbed over 900 career rebounds (970). He ranks 7th on the all-time career blocked shots list with 126. He was inducted into the Tigers' Hall of Fame in 1999.

After graduating from Towson in 1978 Bobby worked as a sales representative for several different corporations. A native of Suitland, Md. who attended Northwestern High School, he was named as the Ethicon Inc.'s top regional sales director four years in a row. At the time of his death Bobby was a successful senior biopharmaceutical sales rep at Amgen where he had been employed for the last seven years.

Bobby is survived by his wife, Anna, sons Robert, Jr. a graduate of Kennesaw State University and Jacob, a senior at Mercer University, a daughter, Mia, a high school junior, his mother Lucille Just-Buddy and sisters Pamela Joyner, Denise Shelton and Patricia Martin.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, January 29th at 11:00 am at the Legacy Church, 1150 Rockaway Road, Senoia, Ga.
