Men’s Swimming and Diving Nipped at Drexel

PHILADELPHIA – In one of the tightest meets this season, the Towson University men's swimming and diving team was nipped by just seven points, falling at Drexel University 147-153 Saturday afternoon.

Brian Benzing was a double event winner at the Daskalakis Athletic Center pool, aiding in a pair of relay wins as well. Ryan Baldino notched first- and second-place finishes while also aiding the relay wins. Ajani Dorner finished third in a very close 1-meter diving competition, with just five points between first and third.

How it Happened
  • The Tigers led the day off with a half-second win in the 200-medley relay, finishing in 1 minute, 30.64 seconds. Towson's A Team was comprised of Evan Bota, Benzing, Nick McClure and Michael Fazio. The Tigers' B Team of Reed Sells, Noah Diacumakos, Trey Adkins and Ryan Baldino was third (1:33.25).
  • Blakely Dean took third for the Tigers in the 1,000-yard freestyle, finishing just three seconds adrift from first with a 9:53.64. Patrick Flint finished third three seconds later at 9:56.32.
  • Fazio and Luke Schwar went second and third in the 200-yard freestyle, the former going in 1:43.26 while the latter touched in 1:45.86.
  • Bota won the 100-yard backstroke with a 50.53, winning by nearly two full seconds. Sells touched third in 52.15. 
  • The Tigers went 1-3-4 in the 100-yard breaststroke as Benzing captured the event with a 54.17, winning by two full seconds. Diacumakos was in third at 57.84 while Ryan Bookstein took fourth in 1:01.02.
  • McClure finished second in a close 200-yard butterfly, stopping in 1:49.17, just over a half-second back from first (1:48.50). Carson Bauer was fourth in 1:57.50.
  • The 50-yard freestyle was another close race as Baldino took second with 21.03 on the clock. Drexel's John Scully won in 20.98 while Adkins finished third in 21.42. Out of the break, Baldino exacted revenge, picking up first in the 100-yard freestyle, clocking a 46.10. Fazio (46.59) finished second, edging Scully by half a second.
  • Sells, Flint and Brendan Farrar were second, third and fourth in the 200-yard backstroke, going in 1:52.88, 1:53.80 and 1:56.10 in order.
  • Benzing picked up his second individual win of the day, timing a 2:02.74 in the 200-yard breaststroke, winning by over a second. Tanner Fatta was in third for the Tigers at 2:08.71 while Diacumakos was fourth at 2:09.12.
  • Bookstein collected first-place points in the 500-yard freestyle with a winning time of 4:43.20. Munson took third with a 4:51.39.
  • The 100-yard butterfly was a close race as McClure finished second in 49.88, less than a second back of first place (49.09). Bota was third in 51.64. Munson took third overall in the 200-yard individual medley with a 2:00.60.
  • Towson's 200-yard freestyle relay team capped the day with a win as Benzing, Fazio, Schwar and Baldino combined for a two-second win at 1:22.77. The Tigers' B Team of T.J.T Bearor, Adkins, McClure and Bota took third in 1:25.57.
  • On the 1-meter board, Dorner took third overall, scoring a 280.57. First place went to Drexel's Jack Patton (285.67) while Will Seely (285.60) of Drexel took second. Dorner captured fourth on the 3-meter board with a score of 211.65.
Up Next for Towson
  • The Tigers have one final dual meet on the calendar as Towson squares up against Delaware.
  • Towson hosts the Blue Hens on Saturday, January 29 with a 10 a.m. start time at Burdick Hall Pool.
  • Saturday's meet will be carried on FloSwimming.
