Three 49.000-Plus Rotations Lead Gymnastics to Season High

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Behind three rotation scores of 49.000 or better, the Towson University women's gymnastics team finished second at an all-EAGL meet Friday night, hosted at the University of North Carolina's Carmichael Arena.

The Tigers (5-2, 2-2 EAGL) put down a season-best 195.975, just shy of the 196.000 scored by the host Tar Heels. The final scores came down to the final rotation as the Tigers put together a 49.050 on the uneven bars while UNC scored a 49.175 on floor. University of Pittsburgh finished third with a 194.300.

Grace Vaillancourt scored a 9.850 on bars for the Tigers, tying for first on the element with North Carolina's Elizabeth Culton. Jenna Weitz also tied for first, scoring a 9.875 on beam. Tar Heel Julia Knower registered the same score.

How it Happened
  • The Tigers led the night off on beam, putting down a season-best with its 49.150, the TIgers' highest beam score since equaling that mark on Feb. 12, 2021. Weitz led Towson on beam with her 9.875.
  • Three Towson gymnasts scored 9.825s on beam: Vaillancourt, Clara Hong, and Lauren Keener. Emerson Hurst posted a 9.800 as Towson's final scorer on the rotation.
  • Towson had the meet-high 49.150 on beam while North Carolina scored a 49.125 and Pittsburgh registered a 48.275.
  • On the floor, Towson was led by Hong and Amy Stewart, both of whom scored 9.825s. Bolen notched a 9.775 as Weitz notched a 9.725. Amanda Pedicelli had the fifth-best Towson score with a 9.525 in her first collegiate floor routine.
  • UNC won the floor with a 49.225, followed by Pittsburgh at 40.025 and Towson scored its 48.675, the lone rotation below 49.000 on the night for the Tigers.
  • Swinging back around to vault, the Tigers were led by Vitoff's 9.850 while Bolen, Mia Davis and Elise Tisler all recorded 9.825s. Weitz scored a 9.775 to round out Towson's third rotation scoring.
  • Towson was the only team north of 49.000 on the vault as the Tigers posted a 49.100 to win the event. Pittsburgh was second with a 48.825 while UNC, which began the night on vault, scored a 48.675.
  • The Tigers finished the meet on bars with Vaillancourt leading the way at 9.850. Steph Macasu made her return to the lineup, scoring a 9.825 to tie with Vitoff for second on the team. Hong and Keener each scored 9.775s for the Tigers.
  • Again, Towson was the only team higher than 49.000 on bars as the Tigers scored a 49.050. UNC was second with 48.975 points while Pittsburgh was third with 48.175.
Behind the Numbers
  • Towson put up its highest score ever at a meet involving UNC since at least 2013 as the Tigers improved on their previous season best by a full tenth of a point.
  • Vaillancourt registered her third podium finish on bars this season and it was the second straight meet in which she tied for the event lead.
  • This also marks the second-straight meet in which Weitz has tied for the lead on beam, joining her 9.775 last weekend at N.C. State.
  • Towson was the only team with three scores above 49.000, doing so on vault (49.100), bars (49.050) and bars (49.150). All three scores were season highs for the Tigers.
  • The Tigers have won three of their last four meetings against Pittsburgh, including back-to-back victories over the Panthers, coupling Friday's win with a 195.175-194.050 win at LIU last season.
