RICHMOND, Va. – Towson University women's soccer junior
Riley Melendez was named 2022 CAA Goalkeeper of the Year, the conference announced Wednesday morning. Melendez was one of five Tigers to earn All-CAA honors and became the first Tiger to earn an individual CAA award in program history.
Melendez was named goalkeeper of the year after posting 0.46 goals against average and a 0.877 save percentage. Her 11 shutouts in 2022 is the most in the country, spearheading a Tiger defense that ranks third in nation in total defense.
The junior became the first Towson player to win a major award since the Tigers joined the CAA in 2002. Melendez was also named to the All-CAA First Team along with classmate
Nia Christopher. This is the second-straight All-CAA First Team nod for Christopher and her fourth All-CAA honor in her career. The Bermuda native scored 12 goals with three assists for 27 points, leading the Tigers this season. Those marks were best in the conference and is eighth and 13
th respectively in the country.
Three Tigers earned All-CAA Second Team honors.
Phoebe Canoles,
Jasmine Hamid, and
Maja Hansson were named to the second team after posting strong seasons. Canoles earns her third all-conference award after being named to third team and all-rookie team as a freshman. The redshirt junior was second on the team with eight goals and a team-best seven assists for 23 points.
Hamid earned her second all-conference honor after a strong 2022 campaign. Hamid posted six goals and six assists for 18 points, with three of her goals coming as game winners. Hansson helped anchor a back line for the Tigers that is third nationally in total defense. The junior from Sweden earned her first all-conference honor helping a Towson defense that gave up just four goals in conference play and eight total. She added an assist in a 7-0 win against Delaware State.
The Tigers begin their run toward a CAA title on Thursday, Oct. 27 against Elon at 7 p.m.
