FORT MYERS, FLA. – The Towson University women's basketball team wraps up road trip with the Fort Myers Tip-Off. The Tigers start against Pittsburgh, then square off with # Maryland and close out with DePaul.
League Honors
Redshirt junior guard
Kylie Kornegay-Lucas was named CAA Player of the Week after flirting with a triple-double in the 83-72 win against Longwood. Kornegay-Lucas had 29 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, a career-high five blocks and three steals. The guard from Camden, Del., had a career-high 11 field goals and three triples on 68.7 FG percentage.
New Faces
Towson added six newcomers this season for the 2022-23 season. Four players played college basketball last year, with two incoming freshmen.
Taiye Johnson transfers in after three years at Radford, while
Alexia Nelson comes after two years at UMBC.
Alina Sendar comes in after one year at Georgia and
Patricia Anumgba comes from CCBC Essex.
India Johnston and
Gabby Scott will make their collegiate debuts this season.
Preseason Honors
Anissa Rivera was picked to Preseason All-CAA First Team after being named All-CAA Preseason Honorable Mention last year. Rivera led the Tigers last season in rebounding, averaging 7.1 boards a game, including a season-best 14 against Frostburg State.
Kylie Kornegay-Lucas was named to the Preseason All-CAA Second Team. Kornegay-Lucas was the 2021-22 CAA Sixth Player of the Year after averaging 8.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game off the bench. The Camden, Del. native led the Tigers in steals with 40 and finished second in assists with 71.
At the Helm
Coach
Laura Harper was announced as the Head Coach of Towson's women's basketball program in April. This is her first season in charge of the Tigers. Harper previously coached Coppin State for the last two years. She inherits a squad that went 24-8 and made a WNIT appearance last year.
SECU Fortress
The Tigers hold a 71-53 (.573) home record since SECU Arena was built, including a 31-14 (.689) record against non-conference opponents.
Preseason Poll
The CAA announced its annual Preseason Poll last month. The Tigers were picked to finish fifth but received two first-place votes, the second most of any CAA team. Drexel was picked to finish first, receiving 10 votes.
Tigers In the Postseason
Towson has reached the postseason three times in the past 15 years. The team made its first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2019. They also advanced to the WBI in 2010. Towson earned their second trip to the Postseason WNIT after a 24-8 season last year.
Scouting the Panthers
Pittsburgh is 4-0 coming into Fort Myers. The Panthers defeated Coppin State 56-41 to kick off the season, then were victorious against George Mason 63-45. Pittsburgh played Bryant and won 93-54 on 60.7% shooting, including 52.2% from three. In their most recent game, the Panthers defeated rival Duquesne 61-45. Liatu King leads Pittsburgh in points, rebounds, blocks and steals. The Panthers were voted to finish in 15th place in the ACC Preseason Poll.
Scouting the Terrapins
Maryland is ranked in both polls coming into the Tip-Off. The Terrapins started the season with an 88-51 win against George Mason. Maryland squared off against defending NCAA champion South Carolina and fell 81-56. The Terrapins bounced back with a win versus Fordham 83-76. Maryland went against Davidson and picked up a 70-52 victory. The Terrapins are coming off a 73-68 win against #17 Baylor. Maryland ranks 21st in the country in three-point percentage, shooting 39.8% from behind the arc. The Terrapins were picked to finish fourth in the Big Ten Preseason Poll and Diamond Miller was voted to All-Big Ten Preseason Team.
Scouting the Blue Demons
DePaul brings a 2-2 record into Fort Myers. The Blue Demons opened the season with a 96-45 victory versus American, but dropped the following game to Northern Illinois 86-79. DePaul lost to Cleveland State 90-83 in overtime. The Blue Demons played Miami U and won 98-83, shooting 50% or better in all four quarters. DePaul sits 10th in the country in scoring offense averaging 89.0 points per game. Aneesah Morrow was picked as a Preseason All-American after being named to the AP Second-Team All-America last season. The Blue Demons were predicted to finish fourth in the Big East.
Last Time Out
Towson picked up its third win of the season after outlasting UMES 69-57.
Gabby Scott led the Tigers with 15 points and five rebounds.
Kylie Kornegay-Lucas had 14 points, seven rebounds, five steals and five assists. Towson held on to a tight lead for most of the first and second quarters. In the start of the third quarter, the Tigers went on a 12-1 run to take control of the game. The Hawks reduced the deficit to four multiple times, but the Tigers had a response each time to remain perfect on the season.

The Tigers will continue the Fort Myers Tip-Off on Saturday with Maryland at 11:30 a.m. and close out the tournament with DePaul on Sunday at 2 p.m. Towson will return to Maryland to face Baltimore rival Morgan State on Wednesday, Nov. 30th at 7 p.m.
