Second-Best Ever Team Score Leads Gymnastics to Sweep

TOWSON, Md. – For the second time in three days at SECU Arena, the Towson University women's gymnastics team put up one of the best scores in program history as the Tigers notched a 196.700 to sweep a quad-meet.

Towson (10-2, 4-2 EAGL) remained unbeaten at home this year, improving to 8-0 at SECU Arena, thanks to four 49.000 or better efforts, another program first. Towson's combined 196.700 was the second-best score in program history, trailing only a 196.800 from March 10, 2000

Reigning East Atlantic Gymnastic League (EAGL) champion Temple finished second, a full two points behind Towson with a 194.650. Eastern Michigan was third with a 194.575 while LIU finished fourth with a 193.350.

The Tigers tied a program-record on vault, scoring a 49.250. On bars, the Tigers logged a 49.025 before a 49.175 on beam, the third-best beam score in program history. Towson capped the night with a second 49.250, this time on floor thanks to a near-perfect 9.95 from Amy Stewart, the third time in program history a Tiger has hit a 9.95 on floor. There have been two 10s on the floor for the Tigers.

Towson had two event winners, Emerson Hurst on beam (9.925) which included a 10 from the event's head judge, and Amy Stewart's 9.95 on floor, scoring the same from each judge.

Behind the Numbers
  • Towson's team score of 196.700 was the second-best score in program history, trailing only a 196.800 from March 10, 2000 against New Hampshire and Pitt. It is the team's highest score ever at SECU Arena, besting a 196.400 on March 18, 2018 against NC State, West Virginia, William & Mary and Cornell.
  • Friday's score was Towson's second 196.000 or better this week, posting a 196.225 Wednesday night against George Washington and William & Mary. Friday's score was the highest score ever turned in by a team under head coach Jay Ramirez, now in his third season at the helm.
  • For the first time in program history, the Tigers logged four team scores of at least 49.000 in a single meet.
  • The Tigers' 49.250 vault score tied the program record set last season at LIU alongside UNH.
  • Stewart's floor score of 9.95 tied for the third-best floor score in program history and was the highest effort for a Tiger at SECU Arena. She is the third Tiger to score a 9.95 with two 10.0s on the books.
  • Hurst's mark of 9.925 is among the top five beam scores contributed by a Tiger. Hurst holds the program record with a 9.975 set last season.
  • The Tigers snapped a four-meet slide against Eastern Michigan, picking up the program's first win ever against the Eagles.
  • Towson has won the four of the last six meetings against Temple, snapping a two-meet skid against the Owls.
  • The Tigers remain unbeaten against LIU, improving to 4-0 against the Sharks.
