COSTELLO APPROACHING WIN #750

Towson head coach Lisa Costello is just three wins away from her 750th career victory with the Black & Gold.

Currently in her 27th season with the Tigers, Costello, who has been the head coach since the 1995-96 season, has been at the helm of 18 winning seasons for Towson, including nine years with at least 34 victories.  In 2018, Towson earned a berth into the National Invitational Softball Championship with a program record 42 wins.

As of 2022, Costello is the 33rd winningest active coach in Division I by total wins.

THE LAKE EFFECT

Mackenzie Lake returns as Towson's starting shortstop after being a member of the CAA All-Rookie Team in 2021.

Lake thus far is avoiding the sophomore slump, hitting 348 with five RBI, plus has seven free passes to just six strikeouts.  So far in her two seasons with Towson, Lake has a career batting average of .371.

FEAR THE FRESHMAN

Sydni Byers is off to a strong start in her freshman campaign, hitting .390 with two home runs and RBI, all team leads.  The New Bern native has five multi-hit games through 15 games to contribute to a .610 slugging percentage.

Her .390 batting average ranks seventh in the Colonial Athletic Association.

NEWCOMERS

Towson added nine new members to the roster including seven true freshmen as well as two transfers from the University of Hartford. These nine join 18 returners, including All-CAA Rookie Team member Mackenzie Lake, and All-CAA Second Team selection Chloe Poulich.

REPPING THE HOME STATE

Five members of the Black and Gold hail from the Old-Line State of Maryland. These players come from the Baltimore-Metro Area, the Washington D.C. Metro Area, and the Eastern Shore.

TOWSON TOURNAMENTS

Towson will hold two tournaments at the Tiger Softball Stadium this season. The TU DeMarini Invite will take place March 4-March 6, and the TU Tiger Clash will take place March 11-March 13.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

UAlbany, standing at 5-5, was also in Rock Hill, South Carolina with Towson two weeks ago, but the two teams did not meet.  The team is coming off a 3-2 tournament in Florida, including victories over Georgetown, Georgia Southern and MTSU.  Junior Morgan Petty is the top player at the plate, hitting .467 with four home runs and 12 RBI in 10 games.  One of the top pitchers for the Great Danes has been senior Maranda Jimenez, who is 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA in 14 innings, striking out 12.

Brown will be playing two games in Catonsville before coming to Towson for its contests, entering the weekend at 4-7.  The team is coming off a 6-1 defeat to Providence on Tuesday.  Freshman Alexis Guevara is the leading pitcher thus far, hitting .333 with three RBI, also throwing 19 innings with a 1.84 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 19 innings.  Classmate Leah Carey is hitting .290 with a .371 on-base percentage.

Monmouth stands at 2-12 on the season after going 1-4 at North Florida last weekend, with the lone win coming over Fairleigh Dickinson.  Senior Lindsey Baron is the primary threat of the lineup, hitting .366 with five doubles and a home run.  Junior Kylie Gletow has thrown the most innings, standing 1-4 with a 4.11 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 47.2 frames.
