Women's Tennis Set for Trio of Matches

TOWSON, Md. — The Towson University women's tennis team is set for a busy week with three matches. The Tigers will first travel to Drexel on April 13 before welcoming Delaware State (April 16) and Bucknell (April 17) to the Towson Tennis Complex over the weekend. The match at Drexel will start at 3 p.m. while the other two matches are set to begin at 1 p.m.

Schedule Update  

Going into the final weeks of the season, the Tigers have made some schedule adjustments. The match against Saint Joseph's originally scheduled for April 15, has been moved to April 23 at 1 p.m., in place of George Mason. The team will also celebrate Senior Day against the Hawks.  

The Delaware match that had previously been postponed on April 7 will be played at the Tiger Tennis Complex on Tuesday, April 19. The team has also added a home match against Morgan State for Thursday, April 21 at 3 p.m.

Last Time Out  

Towson earned a big win over Norfolk State on Sunday, April 9, 5-2.  

The pairs of Themis Haliou/Sissi Axelsson (No. 1) and Jessica Assenmacher/Olivia Rothfeld (No. 2) both came out with dominant wins in doubles to secure the first point of the match for the Tigers.   

The Black & Gold carried the momentum into singles play, as Haliou won on the second court in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Axelsson kept it going with a big win on court No. 5 (6-0, 6-1) and Sarah Pospischill clinched the match win for the Tigers with a 6-4, 6-1 victory on court No. 4. Rothfeld's opponent on the final singles court retired to give the team their fifth point of the day.   

Fall 2021 Recap  

Towson had a solid fall season, competing in four tournaments. Themis Haliou led the way to start off the fall, winning the B Flight at Maryland's Bedford Cup. Sarah Pospischill also placed second in her flight at the tournament. Haliou and Jessica Assenmacher then followed up with a strong doubles performance at ITA's, advancing to the round of 16. At Navy's Blue & Gold Invitational, Pospischill and Lea Kosanovic each advanced to the finals in their respective consolation flight.  

The Tigers ended the season with the Fall Tiger Classic, where the team amassed 15 singles wins. Olivia Rothfeld went 3-0 over the weekend to lead the team.  

New Faces 

In addition to the nine returners, head coach Jamie Peterson welcomed three new student-athletes to the team in the fall. Freshmen Sissi Axelsson and Nadeen Shrebati both joined the squad from Sweden and Australia, respectively. Sophomore Olivia Rothfeld also transferred in from Georgia Southern. Katie Twelves also joined the team for the spring season from the University of Leeds in England.  

Scouting The Dragons 

Prior to defeating Norfolk State (4-1) on March 23, Drexel had dropped six consecutive matches. They most recently lost to Temple on April 8 (5-2). The Dragon's only other two wins have come against UConn (4-3) and Lehigh (6-1).  

The team has come out on top in just one of six home matches this season.  

Investigating The Hornets 

Delaware State was on a four-match winning streak before dropping decisions in their two most recent outings to Morgan State (4-3) and Howard (5-2). The Hornets are 4-3 on the road this season.  

Looking Into the Bison 

Bucknell has had a solid campaign with a 12-7 overall record. won three of its last five matches, falling to Navy (6-1) and Loyola (4-3). The team is 5-6 on the road, falling to only Buffalo (5-2).  

The Bison will play Army on Friday, April 16, before traveling to Towson.  

Next Up 

The Tigers will play three more matches before the start of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships on April 28. The team will welcome Delaware (April 19), Morgan State (April 21) and St. Joe's (April 23).
