Towson Softball Hosts UMBC for Strike Out Cancer Game

The Game: Towson (13-25, 3-9 CAA) vs. UMBC (23-7, 8-3 America East)

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University softball team is set for its Strike Out Cancer game, hosting local rival UMBC for a single game on Wednesday, April 20 at 2 p.m.
 
Towson will be wearing special pink jerseys and other pink gear for the game for breast cancer awareness.  In addition, during the game, Towson will be honored all those struggling with cancer and/or who have lost someone.
 
The team will be raising money for the Red Devils, whose mission is to fund support services that improve the quality of life for breast cancer patients and their families.  Visit their website at https://www.the-red-devils.org/.  The Red Devils, based in Lutherville-Timonium, were founded in 2002 and have invested nearly $5 million to fund treatment support for more than 9,200 breast cancer families so that loved ones are able to enter or remain in treatment.  Fans can also use the QR code below to go to a special, dedicated donation page.

This was originally scheduled to be a doubleheader but was changed to a single game.  All games at the Tiger Softball Stadium are free to attend for the public.   See the attached parking flyer for information on coming to campus for Wednesday's game.

Towson took the first of three games against Delaware over the weekend to be at 13-25 overall and 3-9 in the Colonial Athletic Association.  UMBC won two of three on the road at Maine this past weekend, standing at 23-7 overall and 8-3 in the America East.
 
JUDICIOUS JJ
 
Julia Jackson has been the workhorse of the Towson pitching staff, throwing 127.1 innings on the mound for the Tigers.  The senior out of Simi Valley, California is 10-11 with a 4.40 ERA, pitching 13 complete games and throwing 69 strikeouts on the year.
 
The CAA Pitcher of the Week on March 15, Jackson earned a complete game shutout vs. UNCW on April 10, the team's first shutout of the season.  It was also Jackson's first pitched shutout of her Towson career.
 
POULICH SELECTED AS CAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
 
Hitting .400 in a 3-1 week for Towson, Chloe Poulich was selected as the CAA Player of the Week on March 21.  She is the first Towson player to earn CAA Player of the Week since April 2018.
 
The senior had a pair of multi-hit games during the week, going 3-for-4 with an RBI double vs. Villanova and 2-for-4 with an RBI vs. Quinnipiac, also hitting a home run against Lafayette. 
 
COSTELLO EARNS 750TH CAREER VICTORY
 
Towson head coach Lisa Costello earned her 750th career victory on March 16 at Villanova.
 
Currently in her 27th season with the Tigers, Costello, who has been the head coach since the 1995-96 season, has been at the helm of 18 winning seasons for Towson, including nine years with at least 34 victories.  In 2018, Towson earned a berth into the National Invitational Softball Championship with a program record 42 wins.
 
Through April 18, Costello has 756 career victories as Towson's head coach.
 
BATTLING BRIANA
 
Towson's mainstay in the second spot of the lineup, Briana Ramirez stands third in the CAA with a .387 batting average.  She has notched 46 hits, fourth in the CAA, off 119 at-bats.
 
Ramirez has hit safely in 30 of 36 games played and has hit safely in 12 of her last 13 games.  She has a career batting average of .329 at Towson.
 
THE LAKE EFFECT
 
Mackenzie Lake returns as Towson's starting shortstop after being a member of the CAA All-Rookie Team in 2021.
 
Lake thus far is avoiding the sophomore slump, hitting .308 with four home runs and 18 RBI, plus has 11 free passes to just seven strikeouts.  So far in her two seasons with Towson, Lake has a career batting average of .341.
 
FEAR THE FRESHMAN
 
Sydni Byers is off to a strong start in her freshman campaign as the starting left fielder, hitting .284 with three home runs and 19 RBI, leading the team in the latter category. 
 
The New Bern, North Carolina native also has eight multi-hit games, hitting a combined 4-for-6 in three games vs. Delaware from Apr. 16-17.
 
NEWCOMERS
 
Towson added nine new members to the roster including seven true freshmen as well as two transfers from the University of Hartford. These nine join 18 returners, including All-CAA Rookie Team member Mackenzie Lake, and All-CAA Second Team selection Chloe Poulich.

REPPING THE HOME STATE

Five members of the Black and Gold hail from the Old-Line State of Maryland. These players come from the Baltimore-Metro Area, the Washington D.C. Metro Area, and the Eastern Shore.
