TOWSON, Md. – Following a thrilling overtime win over Hofstra, Milana Zizakovic of the Towson University women's lacrosse team has earned Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Rookie of the Week praise. The CAA made the announcement Monday afternoon.
Corinne Bednarik of Drexel (CAA Player of the Week) and Delaware's Mercy McCarthy (CAA Defensive Player of the Week) rounded out the weekly conference awards.
This is the first CAA Rookie of the Week award for Zizakovic and the sixth overall weekly conference award for the Tigers this season. This is also the team's third consecutive CAA Rookie of the Week award as Shannon Sullivan earned the honor the past two weeks (April 4 & 11). Halley Koras was named the team's first CAA Rookie of the Week (March 14) while Blair Pearre (March 7) and Kerri Thornton (March 14) also picked up CAA Player of the Week awards earlier this season.
In their only game of the week, the Tigers defeated Hofstra on Saturday, April 16, for their second overtime win in a row, 11-10. Zizakovic tallied two clutch scores in the contest, giving the Black & Gold the 4-2 lead in consecutive goals in the first quarter and the pivotal 9-8 edge in the third.
Zizakovic matched her career best of three goals against the Pride, which she previously set this season against Loyola (Feb. 23). She also scooped up one ground ball in the outing.
The Alberta, Canada native is the only freshman to start every game this season. She ranks top-5 in three categories through 13 games: goals (16 – 4th), assists (5 – 5th) and draw controls (41 – 2nd). Zizakovic has scored in all but four games this season and racked up 2+ scores five times.
After taking a week off from competition, Towson will get back on the field to host William & Mary on Wednesday, April 27 at 5 p.m. before ending the regular season with a short trip to Delaware on Saturday, April 30 for a 12 p.m. game.
