Ramirez, Sauer Repeat Regional Coaching Honors

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – For a second-straight year, the Towson University women's gymnastics staff has earned regional recognition from the Women's Gymnastics Coaches Association (WCGA). The WCGA made its announcement Thursday afternoon.

Third-year head coach Jay Ramirez was selected as the Southeast Region Coach of the Year while Ashley Sauer was named Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the year. Sauer was selected alongside West Virginia's Travis Doak and Zaakira Muhammad for the regional honor.

This is the second Coach of the Year honor for Ramirez, who was tabbed as the EAGL Head Coach of the Year at the conclusion of the 2022 East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championship meet in March.

Under the guidance of Ramirez and Sauer, Towson qualified for the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Regional meet for a second straight year and the first time under the current National Qualifying Score (NQS) in their tenure.

Towson finished ranked 34th in the RoadToNationals.com team standings with an NQS of 195.250 after finishing second at the 2022 EAGL Championships, tying the program's best-ever finish at the EAGL Championships.

Finishing ranked 34th marked Towson's best final finish during a full and regular campaign in over two decades when the Tigers finished 28th (1999) and 19th (2000). The Tigers finished 29th last season using a different NQS formula.

The Tigers reset a program record for single-season scores of 196.000 or better, hitting that threshold seven times this season, including a program second-best score of 196.700 at a home quad-meet on February 4.

In addition to the team success, Jenna Weitz qualified for the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championship regional meet as an individual, competing on Thursday, March 31 at the Raleigh Regional event. The junior scored a 9.725, tying for 40th in a very tight field that featured five teams ranked better than 20th in the final standings.
