Smith Picked Fifth Overall in PLL Draft

BRISTOL, Conn. – The pick is in!

Towson University men's lacrosse standout Koby Smith was selected fifth overall in the 2022 Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) Collegiate Draft, hosted Tuesday night on ESPNU at the broadcast giant's campus facility in Bristol, Connecticut.

Smith was drafted to the Atlas Lacrosse Club in the first round as the fifth overall picked. He was announced and selected by Atlas LC head coach Ben Rubeor, for whom Smith played in high school at nearby Loyola Blakefield.

Among one of the best close defensemen in college lacrosse, Smith ranks fourth all-time in program history with 65 caused turnovers, including a team second-best 16 this season. A three-time co-captain, Smith was honored with the CB30 Award prior to the 2020 season. In 2019, Smith was selected USILA All-America Second Team and earned both Inside Lacrosse Media All-America Honorable Mention and USILA All-America Honorable Mention plaudits last season. In spring 2021, Smith was named CAA Preseason Player of the Year and has been selected First Team All-CAA three times (2019, 2021, 2022) and was a Second Team All-CAA and All-Rookie team pick in 2018. Smith will fit well with the PLL's up-and-down, push transition style of play; the former longstick midfielder scored 15 goals and 10 assists in his collegiate career, including six goals and four helpers in his sophomore campaign. He scored what proved to be the game-winning goal against Drexel on April 6, 2018 at home.

Four Tigers will look to make game-day rosters this season. In addition to Smith of Atlas LC, three former Tigers all play for Cannons LC: Ryan Drenner, Zach Goodrich, Alex Woodall. Opening weekend for the 2022 season is set for June 4-5 at University at Albany's Tom & Mary Casey Stadium in New York's Capital District.
