Towson Softball Hosts Hofstra for Regular Season Series Finale

The Games: Towson (14-31, 4-14 CAA) vs. Hofstra (19-25, 11-6 CAA)

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University softball team will be celebrating its senior class this weekend, hosting Hofstra for a three-game series at the Tiger Softball Stadium.
 
Towson and Hofstra are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday, May 7th at 12 p.m. followed by a single game on Sunday, May 8th at 12 p.m. 
 
Senior Day is scheduled postgame after Saturday's doubleheader.  The Tigers will honor the senior class of Katie Capizzi, Melissa Abrahamian, Gracyn Houmis, Lauren Civetti, Bre McDowell, Jess DaBreo, Julia Jackson, Rylee Penrod, Nicole Kidwiler, Chloe Poulich and Cali Christopher.
 
All games at the Tiger Softball Stadium are free to attend for the public.  Saturday's games will be streamed online via FloSports.  Visit FloSports.tv/CAA to view the full Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) schedule and sign up today. 
 
Towson fell in its final CAA road series last weekend in Charleston to stand at 14-31 overall and 4-14 in the league.  Hofstra played a mid-week game, defeating LIU 9-1 in five innings, to be 19-25 overall and 11-6 in the CAA.
 
JUDICIOUS JJ
 
Julia Jackson has been the workhorse of the Towson pitching staff, throwing 153.1 innings on the mound for the Tigers.  The senior out of Simi Valley, California is 11-14 with a 3.97 ERA, pitching 17 complete games and throwing 82 strikeouts on the year.  She currently leads the CAA in innings thrown and complete games.
 
The CAA Pitcher of the Week on March 15, Jackson earned a complete game shutout vs. UNCW on April 10, the team's first shutout of the season.  It was also Jackson's first pitched shutout of her Towson career.
 
POULICH SELECTED AS CAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
 
Hitting .400 in a 3-1 week for Towson, Chloe Poulich was selected as the CAA Player of the Week on March 21.  She is the first Towson player to earn CAA Player of the Week since April 2018.
 
The senior had a pair of multi-hit games during the week, going 3-for-4 with an RBI double vs. Villanova and 2-for-4 with an RBI vs. Quinnipiac, also hitting a home run against Lafayette. 
 
COSTELLO EARNS 750TH CAREER VICTORY
 
Towson head coach Lisa Costello earned her 750th career victory on March 16 at Villanova.
 
Currently in her 27th season with the Tigers, Costello, who has been the head coach since the 1995-96 season, has been at the helm of 18 winning seasons for Towson, including nine years with at least 34 victories.  In 2018, Towson earned a berth into the National Invitational Softball Championship with a program record 42 wins.
 
Through May 6, Costello has 757 career victories as Towson's head coach.
 
BATTLING BRIANA
 
Towson's mainstay in the second spot of the lineup, Briana Ramirez stands second in the CAA with a .381 batting average.  She has notched 53 hits, tied for third in the CAA, off 139 at-bats.
 
Ramirez has hit safely in 36 of 43 games played and has hit safely in 18 of her last 20 games.  She has a career batting average of .331 at Towson.
 
THE LAKE EFFECT
 
Mackenzie Lake returns as Towson's starting shortstop after being a member of the CAA All-Rookie Team in 2021.
 
Lake thus far is avoiding the sophomore slump, hitting .302 with five home runs and 21 RBI, plus has 11 free passes to just 10 strikeouts.  So far in her two seasons with Towson, Lake has a career batting average of .335.
 
FEAR THE FRESHMAN
 
Sydni Byers has earned a strong freshman campaign as the starting left fielder, hitting .267 with four home runs and 25 RBI, leading the team in the latter category. 
 
The New Bern, North Carolina native also has eight multi-hit games, hitting a combined 4-for-6 in three games vs. Delaware from Apr. 16-17.
 
NEWCOMERS
 
Towson added nine new members to the roster including seven true freshmen as well as two transfers from the University of Hartford. These nine join 18 returners, including All-CAA Rookie Team member Mackenzie Lake, and All-CAA Second Team selection Chloe Poulich.

REPPING THE HOME STATE

Five members of the Black and Gold hail from the Old-Line State of Maryland. These players come from the Baltimore-Metro Area, the Washington D.C. Metro Area, and the Eastern Shore.
 
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

Hofstra currently stands third in the CAA with an 11-6 league record.  Leading the lineup is senior infielder Meghan Giordano, who hits .307 with six home runs and 30 RBI.  On the circle is left-handed sophomore Julia Apsel, who is 6-9 with a 2.87 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 95 innings.
