We continue our announcement of the Tiger Title IX 50
th Anniversary Team. Every Thursday beginning on June 9
th, Towson Athletics will release five student-athletes and one staff member for the next 10 weeks, with the total team being complete on Aug. 11
th.
Mary Bartel '81 (Lacrosse/Volleyball): An outstanding two-sport athlete Mary served as co-captain for both lacrosse and volleyball. As a goalkeeper she still holds the program records for career save percentage at .722 and saves in a season with 360. She is second on the all-time save list with 836 career stops. Bartel was named as a reserve on the 1981 U.S. Lacrosse Team. A first team All-MAIAW setter, she led Towson to the 1979 MAIAW title and earned All-Tournament honors.
Tina Shriver '85 (Track & Field): An outstanding all-around performer in track, Tina won the EAIAW Division II heptathlon championship and went on to place 10
th at the AIAW Division I national heptathlon championship. She finished 3
rd in the EAIAW Division I pentathlon. Named the Most Outstanding Performer in the 1983 East Coast Conference Meet, she became the program's 2
nd Tiger to earn All-American honors during her career.
Ruthie Gutridge Lavelle '86 (Lacrosse): The East Coast Conference Player of the Year, Ruth remains the program's all-time leading scorer with 208 goals and 59 assists. She still holds the record for most goals in a game (9), most points in a season (87) and most career points (267). Towson's Senior Female Athlete of the Year in 1986, she was also honored as a Brine All-American.
Maureen Shaneman Hall '89 (Cross Country/Track & Field): During her career Maureen broke four East Coast Conference records and won 11 individual ECC titles. Named the Most Outstanding Performer at three consecutive ECC track and field championship meets, she placed 3
rd at the ECC cross country meet her senior year, the only meet of the season she did not finish first. Maureen still holds TU records in the outdoor 800 (2:07.58), the indoor 800 (2:12.51) and the indoor 1,000 (2:55.10). She was honored as TU's Female Athlete of the Year.
Kerrin Mohr O'Neill '89 (Softball): An outstanding pitcher Kerrin owned program records for wins in a season (13) career (35) and shutouts (12) at the time of her graduation. She remains the only Towson student-athlete to be named a three-time (second team twice, first team once) GTE Academic All-American. She was the East Coast Conference's Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Towson's Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 1989.
Dr. Maggie Faulkner (Coach): As the women's lacrosse coach over a 15-year span Maggie compiled a 105-70-5 record highlighted by a runner-up finish in the 1980 USWLA national championship tournament. She also coached field hockey for five years. A member of the TU faculty beginning in 1970, she would serve as the associate dean for the College of Liberal Arts. Maggie, who was a member of both the US Field Hockey team and the US Women's Lacrosse team, was the first chair of the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Committee from 1981-87.
