Shifflett Bachmann Accepts Head Coach Position at George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va.Megan Shifflett Bachmann, assistant coach for the Towson University women's volleyball program, has accepted a heading coaching position at George Mason University.

A search for Shiflett Bachmann's replacement will begin immediately, per head coach Don Metil.

"I am forever grateful for the time I've spent at Towson," said Shifflett Bachmann of her four years at Towson. "The success, and more importantly the amazing people who are a part of this team, have made the past four years an incredible experience. I cannot express my appreciation enough to Don (Metil) for the opportunities he has given me to grow and prepare to take this next step in my career. I have nothing but the utmost respect for him and this program and know it will continue being successful for years to come."

Shifflett Bachmann joined the eventual back-to-back-to-back Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) champion Tigers in the winter of 2018. Since then, the Tigers have enjoyed a 78-24 (.725) record, and have dropped just nine total matches in the last three seasons. The Tigers hoisted the CAA trophy and earned subsequent berths in the NCAA Tournament in 2019, 2020 (spring 2021) and 2021 (fall).

"Megan is well prepared to lead the Patriot program as she managed many of the daily operational tasks for Towson," said Metil. "She is well rounded with a wealth of experience and knowledge, including on-court instruction and strategies, academic management, and budgetary responsibilities. Megan played a large role in the development and health of our culture and I'm positive the George Mason program will greatly benefit from her leadership."

Working closely with the program's defensive specialists and liberos, Shifflett Bachmann's guidance helped Towson's back line hold opponents to a .162 hitting percentage in her four seasons. In that time, opponent hitting percentage for a season never finished above .195. Over the last three seasons, Towson had the best opponent hitting percentage twice (2019, 2021).

During the 2019 season, Towson had the best digs per set ratio in the CAA, averaging 15.96 per set. The 2021 season was the lone year with Shifflett Bachmann the Tigers averaged less than 15.00 digs per set, backing one of the best defensive units in the country.

Shifflett Bachmann mentored former libero Anna Holehouse for the latter's senior season as Holehouse finished third all-time in CAA history with 2,268 career digs, a Towson program record as well. Last season, Rachel Hess was among the best liberos in the CAA, averaging 4.10 digs per set, despite playing behind the best blocking corps in the conference.
