TOWSON, Md. – Towson University volleyball coach
Don Metil has named
David Beck and
Mariana Silva assistant coaches for the 2022 season. Metil's previous assistant coaches, Terry Hutchinson and Megan Shifflett Bachmann, landed head coaching positions at Georgia State and George Mason during the off-season.
"It's an exciting time when you think of the upcoming 2022 season," said Metil, who is entering his 10
th season as head coach. "Not only do we have 10 fresh faces that have never played a fall season for the Black and Gold, we also have two new assistant coaches ready to contribute to our championship culture. It is not too often that you lose your two assistants, both to head opportunities within the same calendar year, but it speaks on behalf of the successes this program has achieved over the past few seasons."
Towson earned its third-straight Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) title and berth into the NCAA Tournament in 2021, finishing 26-5 overall. The last three years, the Tigers have combined to go 61-9, including a 30-4 record in CAA play.
Beck joins the staff after a three-year stint at the University at Buffalo as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. The Havre de Grace, Maryland native helped the Bulls to one of their best Mid-American Conference records since joining the league in 1998. Prior to his time at Buffalo, Beck was the volunteer assistant coach at the University of Virginia for the 2018 campaign where he was responsible for scouting report preparation throughout the challenging Atlantic Coast Conference schedule. He was a graduate assistant coach at Georgia Southern in 2016 and 2017 after a successful career at Grand Canyon University.
"David is very thorough and brings a passion for Towson and the area being from Havre De Grace," added Metil. "He will assume recruiting responsibilities, as well as assist coaching our attacking options and blocking schemes. He will also take the forefront in video analysis, assist with scouting reports and our social media presence which I believe can generate new fans for Tiger Volleyball."
Silva comes to Towson from Missouri Southern where she spent one season after serving a year and a half with the Northern Virginia Volleyball Association (NVVA). Prior to NVVA, Silva served on the staff of George Mason University as a volunteer coach and as a graduate assistant coach at Valdosta State for two seasons. Silva played two seasons at Florida International University leading the team in assists and service aces as a junior and finishing second in blocks as a senior.
"Mari spent some time in Northern Virginia so she knows the area and after discussing the opportunity with her, I felt very comfortable that she would integrate in our system of methodologies quickly," Metil said. "She is also very versatile having played as a setter and middle blocker, and over the course of the past two years, provided instruction in serve receive. Growing up in Brazil, she brings a complete skill set to Towson that will allow flexibility within our gym for training purposes."
Towson begins the 2022 season at the Pirate Invitational in Greenville, North Carolina on Friday, Aug. 26 before hosting the annual Towson Invitational from Sept. 2-4. Towson will play four matches that weekend, beginning with a battle of Tigers vs. Princeton on Friday, Sept. 2. The squad has two matches the next day, hosting Radford (10 a.m.) and Rutgers (7 p.m.) and takes on Morgan State Sunday, Sept. 4.
"Every program goes through change from departing seniors to new team members, however, this program has experienced a lot of moving parts within the past year," Metil said. "I feel comfortable knowing that our championship culture and our care for one another will accelerate our growth even with such change."
Towson will be hosting the 2022 CAA Tournament from Nov. 17-19. Volleyball season tickets are on sale now: season ticket prices start at $40 for adults and $30 for youth/senior. Including a CAA Tournament all-session pass, prices begin at $55 for adults and $40 for youth/senior.
