Towson Women's Basketball Renews Rivalry with Delaware on Friday Night

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's basketball team squares off against rival Delaware on Friday night on NBC Sports Philadelphia in their first meeting since last year's CAA semi-final.
 
Chasing Milestones
A couple of Tigers have surpassed some great milestones, including Anissa Rivera, who passed 1000 career points against Monmouth after she nailed a three from the top of the key. Skye Williams is 29 points away from 500 career points at Towson.
 
Stepping Into the Spotlight
Quinzia Fulmore has thrived stepping into the starting lineup this season. The sophomore forward from Greensboro, North Carolina is averaging 9.9 points per game to rank second on the team. Fulmore leads the CAA in field goal percentage totaling 55.5% in 16 games. She pulls down 6.9 rebounds a game to rank ninth in the CAA and first on the team.
 
The Sky is the Limit
Skye Williams has started the season on fire. Williams is shooting 48.6% from the floor this season to rank eighth in the CAA in field goal percentage. Williams has totaled eight games where she has finished with 50% or better. The graduate student from Indianapolis, Indiana is averaging a career-best 8.4 pts per game and playing in a career-high 24.9 minutes per game.
 
Leading the Way
Redshirt junior guard Kylie Kornegay-Lucas leads the Tigers in points (15.9), rebounds (6.8), assists (4.1), blocks (1.2), steals (2.4) and minutes (30.4) this season. She ranks fifth in the CAA in scoring, 11th in rebounds, third in assists, third in steals, third in free throw percentage (86.6%) and sixth in blocks. The guard from Camden, Delaware has scored double figures in 15 of the 16 games this season.
 
Hitting the Road
The Tigers continue CAA play with four of their next five games on the road. Towson starts its journey in New Jersey against Monmouth, then travels to Delaware to face the Blue Hens. The Tigers return home to face Drexel, then visit Northeastern and wrap up their adventure with a visit to CAA newcomer Stony Brook.
 
Lockdown Defender
Kylie Kornegay-Lucas has been a hawk of the defensive side of the ball, leading the team in steals and steals per game. Kornegay-Lucas ranks 63rd in the nation and ranks third in the CAA in steals with 38. The redshirt junior averages 2.36 steals per game to be 56th in the NCAA and third in the conference in steals per game.
 
New Faces
Towson added six newcomers this season for the 2022-23 season. Four players played college basketball last year, with two incoming freshmen. Taiye Johnson transferred after three years at Radford, while Alexia Nelson comes after two years at UMBC. Alina Sendar comes in after one year at Georgia and Patricia Anumgba comes from CCBC Essex. India Johnston and Gabby Scott made their collegiate debuts this season.
 
Preseason Honors
Anissa Rivera was picked to Preseason All-CAA First Team after being named All-CAA Preseason Honorable Mention last year. Rivera led the Tigers last season in rebounding, averaging 7.1 boards a game, including a season-best 14 against Frostburg State.
 
Kylie Kornegay-Lucas was named to the Preseason All-CAA Second Team. Kornegay-Lucas was the 2021-22 CAA Sixth Player of the Year after averaging 8.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game off the bench. The Camden, Del. native led the Tigers in steals with 40 and finished second in assists with 71.
 
At the Helm
Coach Laura Harper was announced as the Head Coach of Towson's women's basketball program in April. This is her first season in charge of the Tigers. Harper previously coached Coppin State for the last two years. She inherits a squad that went 24-8 and made a WNIT appearance last year.
 
SECU Fortress
The Tigers hold a 74-57 (.565) home record since SECU Arena was built, including a 32-18 (.640) record against non-conference opponents. Towson holds a 42-40 (.512) against CAA foes.
 
Preseason Poll
The CAA announced its annual Preseason Poll to start the season. The Tigers were picked to finish fifth but received two first-place votes, the second most of any CAA team. Drexel was picked to finish first, receiving 10 votes.
 
Tigers In the Postseason
Towson has reached the postseason three times in the past 15 years. The team made its first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2019. They also advanced to the WBI in 2010. Towson earned their second trip to the Postseason WNIT after a 24-8 season last year.
 
Scouting Delaware
The Blue Hens have accumulated a 10-6 overall record with a 3-2 CAA record. Delaware is led by Klarke Sconiers who averages a team-best 12.5 points per game and shoots 54.1% from the field. Makayla Pippin is the joint top rebounder in the CAA, grabbing 8.8 boards a game. Delaware is tied with Towson and North Carolina A&T for the best field goal percentage defense allowing opposing teams to shoot 36.4% from the floor. The Blue Hens opened their season with an 82-62 win over Longwood, then fell 56-64 to Columbia. Delaware picked up wins against VCU, 63-50, and Vermont, 58-53, before competing in the Daytona Beach Invitational. The Blue Hens dropped the first game against Fresno State 49-53 but defeated Illinois 83-80. Delaware defeated in-state rival Delaware State 74-52 but lost to Duquesne 55-66. The Blue Hens lost to Princeton 47-62 but closed out non-conference play with two wins against Patriot League foes Lehigh, 79-67, and American 66-50. Delaware started CAA play with a 77-65 victory over Hofstra but fell to Monmouth 60-80 and Drexel 57-73. The Blue Hens ride a two-game winning streak into this matchup defeating Elon 71-65 and handing North Carolina A&T its first CAA loss 69-52.
 
Last Time Out  
The Tigers traveled to New Jersey to face off versus Monmouth. Towson got off to a fast start, scoring the game's first eight points. Monmouth responded with an 11-2 run to take a slight edge. The Hawks continued to grow its lead all the way to double-digits, but the Tigers countered with a 19-0 run with 2:36 left in the second quarter. The Tigers took a slim advantage into the locker room, but Monmouth regained the lead early in the third quarter, but Towson took the lead back after a couple of jumpers by Ryann Evans. The Tigers continued to grow their advantage in the fourth. Monmouth tried to come back, but it was too late as Towson picked up its third consecutive win.
