TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's basketball team announced today that Eric Atkins will be joining the Tigers' coaching staff as an assistant coach for the upcoming 2024-25 season.
"Eric is a dream hire for Towson women's basketball," said head coach Laura Harper. "His hunger, his drive, his basketball acumen is undisputed. Eric will have immediate impact on our program and we are blessed to have someone of his pedigree join our program. Eric's four successful years at Notre Dame as point guard are invaluable to the growth and development of our point guards and our guards. We can't wait until we see his positive effects on our program."
Atkins joins the Tigers after spending two seasons as an assistant coach for the Wisconsin Herd, the National Basketball Association (NBA) G-League affiliate for the Milwaukee Bucks. At the Herd, he worked as a player development coordinator for the point guards. Atkins organized and presented scouting reports for the players and the coaching staff while doing postgame teaching techniques through extensive film work.
"I'm really excited to join the Towson Tigers program under Coach Harper. I look forward to connecting and assisting the staff and players as we embark on a CAA Championship," said Atkins.
Before the Wisconsin Herd, Atkins was an assistant coach at George Washington University for one season. Atkins worked with James Bishop, who was a top-ten scorer in college basketball and a First Team All-Atlantic 10. He coached Joe Bamisile, a First Team All-Atlantic 10 player and Brayon Freeman, an Atlantic 10 All-Freshman player.
Prior to George Washington, Atkins spent two seasons at Howard University. He coached Wayne Bristol, MEAC Freshman of the Year, and Charles Williams, Second Team All-MEAC. Atkins coached Makur Maker, a top-20 recruit.
"Eric will be a valuable productive addition to the staff on and off the court. Eric will provide tremendous knowledge and experience to Towson women's basketball. He's a proven winner," said Mount Saint Joseph's head coach Pat Clatchey.
Atkins was a video coordinator at Notre Dame from 2016-19. He analyzed and broke down film for the Fighting Irish for both games and practices.
The Columbia, Maryland native played four seasons at the University Notre Dame. Atkins was the first player to become a three-time captain in the history of the program history. He concluded his career as one of just five Irish players to tally over 1,000 points and 500 assists. He finished 18th all-time on the scoring list with 1,421 points and third in assists with 589. He became the fourth player in program history to have 100 or more assists in each of his four seasons.
"Eric Atkins was one of the great leaders in Notre Dame basketball history, a true coach on the court as a point guard and a talented young coach who has that special ability to connect with young people," said Atlanta Hawks Assistant Coach Mike Brey.
Atkins started his professional career in Greece, playing 26 games for KAOD in 2014-15, averaging 7.0 points and 2.0 assists per game. He played for the Erie Bay Hawks in the NBA Development-League, averaging 6.5 points and 3.0 assists per game over 24 games. Atkins also spent time with the Utah Jazz and Idaho Stampede.
