Towson Track & Field Named USTFCCCA All-Academic Team, Cuervo and Tucker Earn Individual Honors

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Towson University track & field team as well as two individual athletes from the program have earned U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic honors. The team has been named a 2024 USTFCCCA All-Academic Team while rising seniors Cristal Cuervo and Maya Tucker were tabbed All-Academic Athletes, announced by the association Monday afternoon.

In order to be named an NCAA Division I All-Academic Team, the cumulative grade point average (GPA) for all student-athletes on the institution's NCAA roster must be 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. The Tigers accumulated a 3.22 supported by four 4.0 GPAs and nine additional 3.5's or higher.

Academic criteria for individuals to be named NCAA Division I All-Academic Athletes include maintaining a GPA of 3.25 and completing at least two semesters at the nominating institution. Athletic criteria includes being ranked in the top 96 in any championship individual event or the top 48 in any championship relay event for the most recent season for indoor season. For outdoor season the athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships or for the multi-events, must have finished the season ranked in the top 48 in the East or top 48 in the West for the most recent outdoor season.

Business administration major Cristal Cuervo picks up her second consecutive USTFCCCA All-Academic distinction. Cuervo competed in 12 meets throughout the 2023-24 track and field season, setting five new school records. She became the first Towson track female to break 24 seconds in the indoor 200m and 54 seconds in the outdoor 400m. The Panama native attended her second NCAA East Preliminary Round, competing in the 400m where she reset her school record after clocking a 53.24.

Exercise science major Maya Tucker receives her first USTFCCCA All-Academic honor following her second year with the Tigers. Tucker competed 12 times during the 2023-24 slate, setting three school records. At the NCAA East Preliminary Round, Tucker competed in the 100m and 200m as the only Tiger to qualify in more than one event.
