Camp Update #2: Two Weeks to Go

TOWSON, Md. – In two weeks, the Towson University football team will play its first game of the 2024 campaign.

This upcoming week is the final week of camp before classes begin for Towson students.  The following week, players will be balancing their first week of classes along with preparing for game one.

Practices continue to shift between Johnny Unitas® Stadium and the Lower Fields Complex on South Campus.  On Friday, Towson wrapped up its second scrimmage of camp at Unitas with a full officials crew.  The first, second and third teams all saw at least 30 plays as competition continues for depth chart spots.

Preseason camp continues on for Towson, with game one in two weeks in Cincinnati and then The Battle for Greater Baltimore at home vs. Morgan State.  Season tickets, flex plans and single game tickets for Towson football home games are available.  For more information on tickets, contact the Towson Ticket Office at 410-704-4501 or by emailing 4tigertix@towson.edu.

Also a reminder: the 2024 Towson Football Fall Tryout will be on Monday, August 26th at 5:45 p.m.  Go to https://towsontigers.com/sports/2023/1/25/fb-tryouts-2024.aspx for more information including needed materials for the tryout.

Coach Shinnick gave a quick update on how camp has been faring for the Tigers after the second scrimmage.

Q: Two scrimmages in, how do you feel about where the team is at?
Coach Shinnick: We had a lot of great competition today, the defense made some really nice plays in the red zone and the offense had some really nice drives.  A lot of competitive plays and really good looks.

Q: What are the biggest things you have seen improve during these first couple weeks of camp?
Coach Shinnick: We've got a lot of young guys, they continue to get better and grow.  Jasin Shiggs got an interception on a great read on the quarterback in the scrimmage today.  You have a lot of young guys that you can see, every day, the improvement.  On both sides of the ball, you are starting to see what and how they are capable of doing and what it looks like.

Q: What are things you want to see improved as camp continues?
Coach Shinnick: The way fall camp goes, you sometimes have up days, down days; I just want to consistency, but I like how our guys are approaching everything and getting at it day by day.  We've tried to change the schedule up and much as we can to give them different days and it is not getting dull, they have handled all the changes well.

Q: What are those things you've seen from the younger players?
Coach Shinnick: First, I've seen a great group of older players embracing, helping and encouraging them.  That is the sign of a good teammate when they are excited about these young guys coming in and getting reps and doing well.  We knew this was a talented group and was going to be excited, they have not disappointed.
