DOVER, Del. – The Towson University cross country team was victorious at the Delaware State Sting Invitational on Friday afternoon, winning its second consecutive meet of the 2024 season after five Tigers placed in the top 10 individually.
"Back-to-back wins is tough to do at this level," coach
Evan Freeman commented. "To have our young team racing with this much poise and confidence is exciting to see. We built well off of our opener and I'm very proud of the direction we are headed."
The Black & Gold accumulated 28 points, edging out runner up Howard University by five. The time difference of Towson's five fastest runners at this meet was 53 seconds. The team finished with an average 5k time of 19:18.
Sophomore
Baara Stewart had quite a successful race, dropping a minute from her previous PR in the 5k earned two weeks ago at Goucher. She clocked a 18:46.40 to place second overall out of 80 athletes. Her time is the third fastest recorded on a 5k course in Towson program history.
Freshman
Jennifer Maxwell ran nearly a minute faster than her time from Goucher, clocking a 19:08.40 for fourth place.
Senior
Lexi Mogensen ran a 30 second PR, finishing in sixth with a time of 19:29.30.
Rebekka Hillier finished right behind her in seventh in 19:31.50, a PR for the freshman.
Isabella Myles came in ninth place, crossing the finish line in 19:39.70.
Mari Collick rounded out Towson's top 10 finishers, placing 10
th in 19:40.30.
Abbey Frock took 12
th, nearly breaking 20 minutes. The grad student ran a 20:03.40.
Vallerya Rojas (20:50.20),
Rebecca Farris (21:14.90),
Taylor Totevski (21:32) and
Jillian O'Neill (22:02.10) all finished in the top 32.
The Tigers remain in Delaware for the next meet, attending the University of Delaware Invitational on September 20.
