TOWSON, Md. – Mike Larkin, who has been the head coach of the Towson University men's golf team since 2017-18, has been named interim Director of Golf for both the men's and women's programs, Director of Athletics
Steve Eigenbrot announced Wednesday.
"I am excited to promote someone who's done as much for Towson golf coach Larkin," Eigenbrot said. "He is both extremely passionate and detail oriented which bodes extremely well for our student athletes as we work through this transition."
Ashley Grier and former Towson standout
Brad Riley will serve as assistant coaches.
"Honestly, for a long time, we have thought that adding another coach to assist our golf programs was necessary," added Eigenbrot. "This presents a great opportunity for someone we think very highly of to be at the top of a structure that will benefit both our men's and our women's programs."
Larkin was named the 11th head coach of the men's program in May 2017. During his seven seasons at the helm, the Tigers have produced four of the top-10 team scoring averages in school history: 2022-23 (third-294.0), 2023-24 (fifth-294.9), 2021-22 (eighth-296.2) and 2019-20 (ninth-297.5).
Four of the student-athletes he has coached rank in the top-10 in career scoring average: Spencer Alexander (fourth-74.11), Jeremy Summerson (fifth-74.37),
Brad Riley (seventh-74.42) and Justin Griffith (ninth-74.98).
A member of the men's golf team from 2001-05, Larkin played in 42 career tournaments for the Tigers, which included appearances at two NCAA Regional Championships (2004, 2005), and was named the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Scholar Athlete of the Year for Men's Golf (2004, 2005). He currently ranks 10th in all-time scoring average (75.05) and tied for seventh in career rounds played (102).
During the 2005 NCAA Division I Men's Golf East Regionals, Larkin finished ahead of both PGA Tour standouts Kevin Kisner and Luke List. Playing as the No. 3 player for Towson behind Hall of Famers Billy Wingerd and Jeff Castle, he shot rounds of 71-73-72 for a three-over par 216 to finish in a tie for 48
th place, beating Kisner (Georgia) by a stroke and List (Vanderbilt) by two. Coastal Carolina's Dustin Johnson, the former No. 1 ranked player in the world, won the event, shooting 15-under. The field also included PGA Tour standouts Webb Simpson (Wake Forest), Brendon Todd (Georgia) and Jeff Overton (Indiana).
Larkin graduated Summa Cum Laude from Towson in 2005 with a BS in Economics. He spent time playing various professional tours. Nationally, he has twice been medalist at U.S. Open Local Qualifying (2012, 2015) and has competed in the PGA National Assistants Championship (2007, 2008) as well as PGA Tour Qualifying School (2009).
Grier will collaborate with the women's team. Riley will assist with the men's team.
"It might not happen every tournament, but more often than not, we are hoping this allows us to ensure that we have two coaches supporting our Tigers when they compete and we are really excited about that," Eigenbrot said.
Grier is a Class A PGA professional with more than 10 years of experience as an assistant professional at Beaver Creek Country Club (Hagerstown MD), Columbia Country Club (Chevy Chase. MD) and Overbrook Golf Club (Bryn Mawr, PA). A 2006 graduate of Central Florida, Grier is one of the most accomplished players in the Mid-Atlantic region – winning seven Mid-Atlantic PGA titles and competing in five major championships (four KPMG Women's PGA Championships and one U.S. Women's Open).
Riley recently finished a five-year stint with Towson where he finished with an average score of 74.42, seventh on the school's all-time scoring list and he competed in 113 rounds – fourth best in program history.
The Towson women will open the 2024 fall season this weekend at the Bucknell Invitational while the men tee it up at the Howard/USF Invitational beginning next Monday, Sept. 9.
