MAR DEL PLATA, Argentina – Cristal Cuervo of the Towson University track & field team represented her home country of Panama in the 2025 LIV South American Championships Sunday afternoon at Pista de Atletismo Justo Román in Mar Del Plata, Argentina.
The South American Championships, organized by CONSUDATLE, is a biennial event that began in 1919. The inaugural edition featured only Chile and Uruguay, but the competition has since expanded and has generally been held every two years since 1927.
Last year, Cuervo competed in the XXXIV Central American Games and secured two gold medals for Panama. She dominated her heat in the 400m after clocking 53.64 to take first place overall. Cuervo picked up another gold in the 200m, finishing with a time of 23.72. The senior currently holds the Panamanian national record in the 200m after running 23.68 at the 2025 CAA Indoor Championships last month.
Cuervo placed third in her heat of the 200m at the LIV South American Championships with a time of 23.77. In the finals, the senior secured eighth place.
