RICHMOND, Va. – With long droughts eliminated and bringing the Towson University women's soccer team to the brink of a conference tournament berth, four Tigers have earned All-Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Honors, announced by the league office Thursday evening.
Senior defender/midfielder
Marissa Green and redshirt junior
Taylor Sebolao were named to the league's Third Team, while freshman midfielder
Justine Stoner was tabbed All-Rookie. Senior forward
Izzy Latour was named to the CAA's All-Academic Team as well.
James Madison University's Ashley Herndon was the Player of the Year as Drexel's Christiana Ogunsami and William & Mary's Clara Logsdon were the Co-Defensive Players of the Year. James Madison's Haley Crawford was the Rookie of the Year while Drexel's Ray Goon was the 2016 CAA Coach of the Year.
This marks the first time since Towson joined the CAA for the 2002 season the Tigers had two players named Third Team All-CAA. Stoner becomes Towson's first All-Rookie selection since
Maddie Bove was selected in 2014. It is the first All-CAA for all four student-athletes.
A native of Bowie, Maryland, Green started in all 19 games during her final season. She logged time as both a midfielder and a back. Green finished as the team's leading point getter, scoring four goals and adding an assist. She scored her first goal since the 2014 season with a strike against Bowling Green in the Tigers' 5-1 win at the Navy Invitational. Green did a bulk of her damage in conference time, scoring three CAA goals, including one in back-to-back games against UNCW and College of Charleston. Her tally against UNCW was the game-winner, giving Towson its first win at home over the Seahawks since 1994. Green was the only player alive the last time that happened. The communications major was a workhorse all season, playing in 1,497 minutes during the year, the second-most by a Towson field player.
Making 18 starts as a redshirt junior, Sebolao stopped 96 opponent shots during the season, including 10 at Penn and another 11 versus CAA rival Elon. The Scotch Plains, New Jersey product had five clean sheets during the year, tying her for the fifth-most by a Tiger in a single season. One of those shutouts was a 2-0 over George Washington, a saveless game for Sebolao. A marketing major, Sebolao amassed 1,623 minutes of time in goal and was third in the CAA in saves per game (5.33).
During her true freshman season, Stoner played in all 19 games, including 15 starts. She made her collegiate debut at Georgetown on Aug. 19 and scored her first goal for the Tigers in a 5-1 win over Bowling Green at the Navy Invitational. Stoner set the table for Towson's 2-1 win at William & Mary, scoring the Tigers' first goal in that game as Towson topped the Tribe in Williamsburg for the first time in program history. Stoner was a staple in the middle for Towson this season, logging 1,186 minutes, ranking seventh in total minutes while leading all rookies. Despite her size, Stoner brought a big leg to the field and was one of the Tigers' go-to choices on corner kicks all season.
An All-Academic selection for the first time in her career, Latour becomes the third different Tiger to earn the honor. Native to Gaithersburg, Maryland, Latour is majoring in early childhood special education and carries a 3.868 grade point average through the Spring 2016 semester, backed by a perfect 4.00 in the spring. Latour played in all 19 games in her senior season, including five starts. Coming off of a season-ending injury in 2015, Latour got her first points since midway through her freshman campaign, burying a goal in Towson's 5-1 win over Bowling Green at the Navy Invitational.
