TOWSON, Md. ? Senior forward Sebastian Haensel (Leipzig, Germany) and senior defender Nigel Marples
(North Delta H.S./Delta, British Columbia, Canada) of Towson University
have been named as first team selections on the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA) All-South Atlantic regional team, it has
been announced by the NSCAA.
In addition, junior midfielder Pat Healey (Calvert Hall H.S./Bel Air, Md.) was honored as a third team selection.
Coach Frank Olszewski and the Tigers finished the
most successful season in school history with an overall record of
15-2-3 and reached the third round of the NCAA College Cup. Towson won
the Colonial Athletic Association regular season title with a 10-0-1
record and was seeded 15th in the nation in the College Cup.
Towson was one of three schools with two players named to the
All-South Atlantic first team. Of the 12 players on the first team, the
Tigers, Maryland and Old Dominion had two honorees each.
Haensel, who was named second team All-Region as a junior, led the
Tigers in scoring with seven goals and eight assists. Six of his goals
were game-winners. A two-time selection as first team All-CAA, Haensel
finished his career with 23 goals and 18 assists, tied for tenth on
Towson's career scoring list with 64 points.
A key to the Tigers' record-setting defense, Marples was a four-year
starter and two-year co-captain for the Tigers. He started 68 of 72
career matches. As a senior, he was the backbone of a defense that
ranked eighth in NCAA Division I with a 0.62 Goals Against Average. He
helped the Tiger defense set a school record with 11 shutouts. Marples
was also named first team All-CAA.
A three-year starter, Healey earned first team All-CAA honors this
season. A starter in all 20 games, he was the Tigers' second-leading
scorer with six goals and three assists. A second team All-CAA pick as
a sophomore, he has started 55 of 56 career games. He has scored 19
goals with 14 assists in his career.
This marks the first time that Towson University has placed more than one player on the All-South Atlantic regional first team.
