TOWSON, Md. ? Sophomore Brooke Golden won three individual events and was a member of a winning relay team as the Tigers (4-0) extended their dual meet win streak to 12 straight dual meets with a 198-102 victory over East Carolina University (4-1) in a non-conference women's swimming and diving meet at Burdick Pool on Saturday afternoon.
In earning the victory, the Tigers avenged last year's loss against the Pirates at the Minges Aquatic Center, their last defeat prior to the current win streak.
“This was a great win for our women over a very well-coached team,” Towson Coach Pat Mead said. “The score doesn't represent how close the meet really was for the women. It all came down to touchouts and who got to the wall first.”
Golden earned first place in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:18.88 before taking the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:05.49. After winning the 500-yard freestyle by touching the wall in 5 minutes, 1.33 seconds, she helped the Tigers win the 400-yard freestyle relay by swimming the second leg of the Tigers' victorious team, which finished with a time of 3:31.25
Sophomore Meredith Budner, the reigning Colonial Athletic Association Swimmer of the Week, earned victories in two events against the Pirates. She took first place in the 200-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 1:51.21 before earning a first place finish in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:08.76.
Senior Danielle Kelly led the Tigers to a victory in the 100-yard backstroke by turning in a time of 58.60 seconds before earning a victory in the 200-yard backstroke with a mark of 2:06.39. Meanwhile, freshman Cari Czarnecki won the 100-yard breaststroke by touching the wall in 1:05.58.
Senior Hillary Rieveley earned a first place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.20 seconds in addition to helping the Tigers win the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay. Freshman Veronica Feltrin took first place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.86 seconds, just missing the Towson freshman record held by Jen Irby.
Sophomore Megen Donovan led the Tigers to the victory in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:24.59, just edging freshman Maegan McLaughlin, who turned in a second place time of 2:24.62.
“The depth and improvement of our women's team is what continues to be our strength,” Mead said. “We got great swims from our freshmen, including Kristin McCandless, Maegan McLaughlin and Veronica Feltrin.”
Freshman Meghan Coyne led the Pirates in the loss by winning the one-meter diving event with 254.32 points while senior Amanda Duncan earned first place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.82 seconds.
The Tigers will begin a lengthy road trip next weekend when they travel to George Mason for a CAA meet against the Patriots, Delaware and UNC Wilmington.
