TOWSON, Md. ? Senior righthander Claire Reitmann-Grout and sophomore righthander Shannon Johnston
combined to pitch a five-hit shutout as they led the Tigers (6-5) to
their second straight victory, a 2-0 win over visiting Mount St. Mary's
(2-14) at the Tigers' Towson Center Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Reitmann-Grout started the game and picked up her second win of the
season by pitching four shutout innings. She allowed three hits and
walked three batters with five strikeouts. Reitmann-Grout has now
pitched 15 straight scoreless innings in her last four appearances for
the Tigers.
Johnston pitched the final three innings, shutting out the Mounties on two hits. She earned her first save of the season.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as junior leftfielder Emily Gould drew a walk. When senior designated player Aimee Rosa doubled down the right field line, Gould scored all the way from first base to give Towson a 1-0 lead.
Towson added an insurance run in the third inning when sophomore second baseman Mindy Bean led off with a triple and scored on a single by freshman shortstop Sammi DiPompo. The Tigers threatened to add more runs in the inning but leftfielder Jess Burke made a diving catch on a ball hit by senior Nina Navarro. Burke then doubled Kim Lempa off second base to end the threat.
A heads-up play by DiPompo in the seventh inning extinguished the Mounties' final scoring threat. With one out, Katie Donovan bunted a ball over the head of Tiger third baseman Stef Streets.
DiPompo chased the ball down in foul territory and threw Donovan out at
second base as she tried to stretch her hit into a double.
Sophomore first baseman Allie Vadas had two hits, including a double, for the Mounties while Donovan added a pair of singles.
Navarro had two of the Tigers' five base hits.
Junior righthander Jamie Fowler pitched well in
defeat for the Mounties. She threw her sixth complete game of the
season as she scattered five hits. Fowler, who is now 1-8 on the
season, walked two and had seven strikeouts.
The Tigers return to action this weekend when they travel to Florida Atlantic University to play in the FAU MIken Classic.
