Tigers Edged in Season Opener, 1-0

TOWSON, Md. ? Opening their season, the Tigers were hoping to continue the success at home that they have enjoyed over the last few seasons. However, Mother Nature and a tough Fairfield squad spoiled the Tigers' opener as the Stags posted a 1-0 victory at soggy Towson Center Field on Friday afternoon.

Junior midfielder Christian Uy scored the game's only goal in the 34th minute to lead the Stags to the victory.

It was the first meeting between the two teams since the 2006 NCAA Tournament when Towson beat Fairfield by a 2-0 margin.

Uy, who scored three goals with three assists last year for the Stags, converted a cross-field pass from sophomore forward Tucker Nathans to score past freshman goalkeeper John Steele with 11:02 remaining in the first half.

The Tigers, who were down to 10 players on the field after a red card was issued to freshman forward Liam Maloney in the 15th minute, had several scoring chances in the second half, including a shot by junior forward Kevin Ruck with 13:35 remaining that hit the right goal post.

Sophomore goalkeeper Justin Burse earned the shutout for the Stags by making one save as Fairfield outshot Towson by a 15-7 margin.

Making his college debut, Steele posted five saves in a losing effort.

The Tigers will travel to Rutgers University on Wednesday night for a 7:30 p.m. match against the Scarlet Knights.
