FARMVILLE, Va. ? Junior forward Tommy Appel-Schumacher scored two goals and added an assist as the Tigers (2-2-0) won for the second time in the last three games with a 3-0 non-conference victory over Longwood University (2-2-1) at the Lancers' Athletic Complex on Saturday evening.
The Tigers scored three goals in the first 17 minutes of the game en route to their first shutout of the season.
“It was a great start by our team and our guys remained focused for the rest of the game,” Coach Frank Olszewski said. “We had guys come in with energy and that energy was a key part to our success tonight.”
Appel-Schumacher gave the Tigers a quick 1-0 lead just 3:39 into the first half when he converted a pass from junior Kevin Ruck. Just under 10 minutes later, Appel-Schumacher upped the Towson advantage to 2-0 with his second goal of the game by scoring off assists from sophomore Phil Greatwich and freshman Liam Maloney.
Sophomore defender Scott Horta extended the Tiger cushion to 3-0 at the 16:59 mark when he scored his second goal of the season. Appel-Schumacher and senior Matt Beckman were credited with assists on the play.
From there, freshman goalkeeper John Steele and the Tiger defense held off the Lancers to preserve the shutout. Steele earned the first shutout of his college career with a season-high seven saves, including four in the second half.
“John was very solid between the pipes while directing the team and making the saves he needed to make,” Olszewski said. “You figure that in a game like tonight that the other team is going to come after you in the second half and you have to be ready and remained composed, which John did a great job of for us.”
Freshman goalkeeper Joel Helmick made five saves in a losing effort for the Lancers, which had its three-game unbeaten streak snapped.
The Tigers will return home on Wednesday afternoon to host UMBC at 4 p.m.
