Tigers Outlast UMBC for 2nd Straight Win

TOWSON, Md. ? Freshman forward Liam Maloney scored a goal and added an assist as Towson University (3-2-0) won its second straight game, a 2-1 non-conference victory over the University of Maryland Baltimore County (3-2-1) at the Tigers' Towson Center Field on Wednesday afternoon.

It was the 29th all-time meeting between the teams. Towson now leads the all-time series by a 13-11-5 margin.

“We have been trying to put together two good halves and even though things were hectic at the end, I think we did a good job of accomplishing that today,” Towson Coach Frank Olszewski said. “We needed a ?bend but don't break' mentality against a UMBC team that threw everything including the kitchen sink at us.”

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead at the 14:30 mark when junior forward Kevin Ruck scored his second goal of the season, converting passes from Maloney and senior forward Matt Beckman.

Less than 14 minutes into the second half, Maloney upped the Tiger advantage to 2-0 when he scored his second goal of the season off an assist from sophomore defender Phil Greatwich. It was Greatwich's second assist of the year.

With 11:15 remaining, the Retrievers narrowed the deficit to 2-1 when freshman Andrew Bulls tallied his team-leading third goal of the season, an unassisted marker past freshman goalkeeper John Steele.

Steele made five saves for the Tigers while senior goalkeeper Steve King made two saves in a losing effort for UMBC.

The Tigers outshot UMBC by a 17-12 margin and held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.

The Tigers will begin a two-game road trip on Saturday night when they face Stony Brook University at 7 p.m. Meanwhile, UMBC begins a three-game homestand on Saturday against La Salle at 1 p.m.
