STONY BROOK, N.Y. ? Freshman goalkeeper John Steele recorded his second shutout of the season by making four saves as the Tigers (4-2-0) won their third straight game, a 1-0 non-conference victory over Stony Brook University (2-5-1) at the Seawolves' LaValle Stadium on Saturday evening.
During the Tigers' three-game win streak, they have allowed just one goal while outscoring their opponents by a 6-1 margin.
“Stony Brook is a difficult team to play against,” Towson Coach Frank Olszewski said. “They are very organized and it was a difficult game especially with them playing at home. We were able to put together two good halves and this was good preparation for what we have coming up with our CAA schedule.”
Freshman forward Liam Maloney gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead at the 61:03 mark when he scored his team-leading third goal of the season, converting a pass from sophomore midfielder Marco Mangione. It was Mangione's first assist of the season.
The Seawolves had a pair of scoring opportunities in the final 25 minutes, but Steele stopped both chances to preserve the shutout.
Senior goalkeeper Dawid Ditrich made four saves for the Seawolves, who outshot Towson by an 11-5 margin. The Tigers were held without a shot in the first 58 minutes.
The Tigers will open their Colonial Athletic Association schedule next Saturday night when they travel to the College of William & Mary for a 7 p.m. match against the Tribe. Meanwhile, the Seawolves will travel to Marist on Wednesday evening.
