WILLIAMSBURG, Va. ? Freshman goalkeeper John Steele made six saves to earn his third shutout of the season as the Tigers (5-2-0, 1-0-0) opened their Colonial Athletic Association schedule with their fourth win in a row, a 2-0 victory over the College of William & Mary (4-1-2, 0-1-0) at the Tribe's Albert-Daly Field on Saturday evening.
It was the Tigers' fourth straight win over the Tribe and snapped William & Mary's six-game unbeaten streak to start the season.
"William & Mary is a very good team and they kept throwing things at us right until the end," Towson Coach Frank Olszewski says. "We kept composed when William & Mary kept pushing forwards up in the later part of the second half. I thought the back line played very well tonight and you don't play well against a team like this unless you are coordinated and we were tonight."
After a scoreless first half, junior forward Tommy Appel-Schumacher gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead at the 48:31 mark when he scored his third goal of the season, converting a pass from freshman Liam Maloney. It was Maloney's third assist of the year.
Less than two minutes later, the Tigers upped the advantage to 2-0 when freshman Nicolas Bermudez Roa scored the first goal of his college career, a penalty kick marker past sophomore goalkeeper Andrew McAdams.
From there, the Tigers held off the Tribe to post their third shutout in the last four games. During the four-game win streak, the Tigers have outscored their opponents by an 8-1 margin.
Steele tied a season high by making six saves as the Tigers were outshot by a 16-9 margin. The Tribe also held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
McAdams made one save in a losing effort for the Tribe.
The Tigers will return home on Friday, October 3 to host Drexel University at 4 p.m. in a CAA contest. Meanwhile, the Tribe will travel to James Madison on Wednesday night.
