TOWSON, Md. ? Freshman forward Liam Maloney scored the first goal of his college career, but the Tigers were unable to earn their second straight win as Loyola College (3-0-0) rallied with two goals for a 2-1 victory over Towson in the 56th meeting between the teams at Towson Center Field on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore forward Phil Bannister tied a career high by scoring two goals as the Greyhounds earned their third straight win. With the win, Loyola improves its advantage in the all-time series to 37-15-4. It was the Greyhounds' second straight victory over the Tigers.
Maloney gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute when he scored the first goal of his college career, converting a corner kick from senior midfielder Matt Beckman.
With 1:39 remaining in the first half, Bannister tied the game at 1-1 when he scored off a pass from junior forward Jamie Darvill for his first goal of the season.
Bannister gave Loyola a 2-1 advantage with just under two minutes left in regulation when he scored off a header past freshman goalkeeper John Steele. Sophomore midfielders Eddie Dines and Charlie Hutton were credited with the assists on the play.
Junior goalkeeper Milos Kocic made two saves for the Greyhounds, who outshot Towson by a 17-10 margin. Steele tied a season high with five saves for the Tigers in a losing effort.
The Tigers will travel to Longwood University on Saturday evening for a 7 p.m. game against the Lancers. Meanwhile, the Greyhounds will host Campbell on Wednesday afternoon.
