Tigers Edged by UNC Wilmington, 2-1

BALTIMORE, Md. – Junior defender Indy Smith and junior forward Tyler Clare each scored a goal in the second half as UNC Wilmington (8-2-2, 4-0-1) overcame a 1-0 half-time deficit to earn its third straight win, a 2-1 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Tigers (5-7-0, 2-4-0) at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field on Sunday afternoon.

The game was played at the Loyola University Maryland campus due to unplayable field conditions at the Tigers' Towson Center Soccer Complex.

“In a game like today against a good team like UNC Wilmington, you have to play 90 minutes and I thought we did that except for a 30-second span and [the Seahawks] took advantage of that,” Towson Coach Frank Olszewski said.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the final minute of the first half when senior defender Maxx Hurkamp headed in a corner kick from sophomore forward Liam Maloney for his first goal of the season.

Trailing by 1-0, the Seahawks scored twice in a 35-second span to take a 2-1 advantage. Clare scored his first goal of the season at 61:22 when he converted a pass from junior midfielder Daniel Roberts to tie the game. Just 35 seconds later, Smith gave the Seahawks a one-goal edge when he scored off passes from sophomore defender Christian Davidson and junior defender Jeff Shapiro.

From there, sophomore goalkeeper Brandon Miller and the Seahawk defense kept the Tigers from tying the game. Miller, who replaced junior goalkeeper Brock Duckworth at the intermission, made three saves to earn the victory as the Seahawks extended their unbeaten streak to four straight games.

Sophomore goalkeeper John Steele made one save for the Tigers, who dropped their second straight game.

The Tigers will return home to the Towson Center Soccer Complex on Wednesday afternoon when they host the University of Delaware at 3 p.m. Meanwhile, the Seahawks will return home to host William & Mary on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
