OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Three first-half goals and a strong showing by the defense allowed the Tigers to post a 3-0 victory over Appalachian State on Sunday afternoon. Towson (5-9) won its second straight as Katie DeFilippo scored the game-winner for the second straight game.
"I'm proud of the team and the way they came out to play today," said Coach Michelle Webber. "I thought despite the strange circumstances to start (game delayed half an hour for snow/slush removal from field) that the team came out and stuck to its game plan and did well."
Towson wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard as just 1:36 into the game, DeFilippo found the back of the net for her fourth goal in the last two games. This time, her goal was assisted by Blythe Mackie.
The Tigers would add to their lead in the 26th minute as Jamie Salvador scored off a penalty corner. The assists on Salvador's goal went to Brooke Smith and Angie Brewer.
Towson's final goal came just before the half in the 29th minute. Mariah Schuette found Kristie Blumer with a nice pass and Blumer knocked it home for her second goal of the year.
The Tigers outshot the Mountaineers 15-2 in the first half and held an 8-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the second 35 minutes of action as the Tigers posted their first shutout of the season.
Towson finished the game with a 19-3 lead in shots and a 12-4 advantage on penalty corners.
For the second straight game, Jamie Dowling and Whitney Clugston split time in net for the Tigers. Neither was forced to make a save as they split the shutout. Bridgette Street started in goal for Appalachian State and made seven saves. Denise Adams came in in relief of Street and was not forced to make a save.
Towson puts its two game win streak on the line when it returns to Colonial Athletic Association play on Friday, October 23 at Delaware at 7 p.m.
