PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - After being limited to just one goal in its previous three games, Towson University (3-5-0, 0-2-0) exploded for a season-high five goals in its Colonial Athletic Association game against Drexel University (5-3-0, 1-0-0) at Vidas Field on Saturday evening. However, the Dragons' offense was just as explosive and rallied from a two-goal deficit for a 6-5 double overtime victory over the Tigers.
Freshman midfielder Nathan Page scored the game-winning goal with 4:17 remaining in the second overtime period as the Dragons overcame a 4-2 deficit with 20 minutes remaining in regulation to beat the Tigers for the third time in the last four meetings.
Less than two minutes into the first half, the Tigers took a 1-0 lead when senior forward Tommy Appel-Schumacher scored on a high cross from the right side for his second goal of the season.
But, the Dragons responded and used goals from senior midfielder Fabio Assumpcao and sophomore Andrew Goldberg less than two minutes apart to take a 2-1 advantage with 24:39 remaining in the first half.
With 12:31 left in the opening stanza, sophomore forward Liam Maloney tied the game at 2-2 with his team-leading sixth goal of the season, a free kick from 18 yards out that beat freshman goalkeeper Tim Washam.
The Tigers regained the one-goal lead midway through the second half when sophomore midfielder Nicolas Bermudez Roa scored on a long chip from midfield that sailed over Washam's head. Just over three minutes left, the Tigers upped the lead to 4-2 when freshman midfielder Juan Esteban Garcia Cabrales scored the first goal of his college career with an unassisted goal.
However, the Dragons rallied to tie the game with a pair of goals in a three-minute span. With 16:22 left, Assumpcao tallied his second goal of the game with a 25-yard blast after a pass from junior midfielder Nate Baker. In the 77th minute, Baker scored on a 10-yard shot after beating three defenders to tie the game at 4-4.
With 7:21 left in regulation, junior midfielder Marco Mangione gave Towson a 5-4 advantage after he converted a penalty kick for his fourth goal of the season.
The Dragons tied the game at 5-5 with 3:37 left when Goldberg tallied his second goal of the game, an unassisted tally past sophomore goalkeeper John Steele.
In the first overtime period, Assumpcao had a chance to give the Dragons the victory but his attempt with 41 seconds remaining was stopped by Steele and the game went into a second overtime period.
With 4:32 remaining in the second overtime period, the Tigers had an opportunity to win the game, but an attempt from senior defender Maxx Hurkamp sailed wide. On the ensuing possession, Page took a feed from Goldberg and scored on a low shot to the right side of the goal for the game-winning goal.
Assumpcao and Goldberg each scored two goals and added an assist for the Dragons while Washam made five saves.
Steele made a season-high seven saves in a losing effort for the Tigers, who were outshot by a 23-17 margin. The Dragons also held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Tigers will continue their brief two-game road trip on Wednesday night when they travel to George Mason for a 7 p.m. CAA game against the Patriots. Meanwhile, the Dragons will travel to Delaware on Wednesday night to face the Blue Hens at 7 p.m. H
