Tigers Rally to Edge #23 George Mason, 2-1

FAIRFAX, Va. – During the Tigers' first eight games this season, junior midfielder Marco Mangione and sophomore forward Liam Maloney have been the offensive leaders of the team. In Wednesday's game against 23rd-ranked George Mason, they teamed up again to lead the Tigers (4-5-0, 1-2-0) to a 2-1 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Patriots (7-3-0, 2-1-0) at George Mason Stadium.

Maloney and Mangione each scored a goal in the final 12 minutes of regulation as the Tigers overcame a 1-0 deficit to snap their four-game losing streak. They also snapped the Patriots' five-game win streak.

“We needed to stick to our game plan tonight against a very tough team like George Mason and we were able to do that,” Coach Frank Olszewski said. “While Liam and Marco scored the goals tonight, the entire team made contributions and really helped us to the win.”

After a scoreless first half, the Patriots took a 1-0 lead just over three minutes into the second stanza when sophomore forward Draymond Washington scored his third goal of the season off an assist from junior forward Victor Freeman.

George Mason led by 1-0 until the 79th minute. After a red card was issued against freshman defender Ryan Reichmann, Mangione was awarded a penalty kick, which he converted to tie the game at 1-1. It was his fifth goal of the season.

Less than four minutes later, Maloney gave the Tigers a 2-1 advantage when he knocked home a rebound of a shot by sophomore Nicolas Bermudez Roa for his team-leading seventh goal of the season.

From there, the Tiger defense held George Mason without a shot to give the Tigers their first CAA win of the season.

While Mangione and Maloney led the Tigers offensively, sophomore goalkeeper John Steele made two saves.

The Patriots held a 16-10 advantage in shots and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Tigers will return home to host Old Dominion on Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile, the Patriots will travel to James Madison on Saturday afternoon.
