RICHMOND, Va. – Sophomore forward Liam Maloney of Towson University has been named as a first team selection on the All-Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer team, it has been announced by CAA officials.
In addition, junior midfielder Marco Mangione was named to the All-CAA second team while junior defender Scott Horta was a third team selection.
“To have three returning players named to the All-CAA team is quite an accomplishment with future dividends to be paid from such a young team,” Towson Coach Frank Olszewski said. “I am sure they will work even harder towards 2010 to improve and to become team leaders on and off the field.”
The Tigers' leading scorer for the second straight year, Maloney is tied for the CAA lead with ten goals and also contributed four assists. With 24 points, he is the third-leading scorer in the CAA. He recorded the first multi-goal game of his college career when he scored both of the Tigers' goals in a 2-1 victory at Fairfield in early September.
Maloney also scored the eventual game-winning goal in the Tigers' 2-1 win over George Mason and tallied the game-winning goal with 48 seconds remaining against Georgia State on November 1.
A second team All-CAA selection last year, he has scored 17 goals with 8 assists in his career.
“This is a well deserved honor for Liam,” Coach Olszewski said. “His passion is contagious. Liam is one of the top forwards in the CAA and the region.”
The fourth-leading scorer in the CAA, Mangione contributed eight goals with four assists, including four game-winning goals. A two-time selection as the CAA Player of the Week, Mangione also converted all three of his penalty kick attempts.
Named as the NSCAA National Player of the Week on October 14, Mangione led the Tigers to a pair of 2-1 victories over George Mason and then 20th-ranked Old Dominion. He scored three of the Tigers' four goals in the back-to-back wins, including both goals against the Monarchs.
He was also named as the CAA Player of the Week after scoring a goal in the Tigers' victories over Lehigh and Saint Joseph's. Mangione also scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Delaware.
“I am very pleased for Marco,” said Coach Olszewski. “He has worked extremely hard to improve and to help the team. He is an exciting player with the ball at his feet.”
Named to the All-CAA third team for the third straight year, Horta is a two-year team captain who started all 17 games for the Tigers. Horta led a Towson defense which posted shutout wins over Lehigh and Delaware. In addition, the Tigers allowed one or fewer goals in 10 of their 17 games.
In his career, Horta has played in 53 games and made 46 starts. He has also scored five goals with two assists in his career.
Coach Olszewski said, “Scott has proven to be a force in the middle of the defense. He works hard at being a leader for the team in an unselfish capacity. It is great to see him recognized by the CAA.”
